Interesting that the sailor/pirate figure outside the Rose & Crown is without the bow of the boat beneath his feet. Recently the boat which was there for many years has been removed and the same brackets seem to be in evidence.

With regard to the Steine Street photo, I can vaguely remember going with my parents to the Southdown Garage to catch a coach to London (I think). In those days Pool Valley would have been too full of buses to be used as a coach station.
Was it Pickford's depository? I can remember them having an office near the station end of Queen's Road. I remember as a child seeing toy removal vans in the window.
I seem to remember there being underground toilets, and also a street fire alarm facing West Street.
