I’m not an expert on these things. Out of interest, why did a whole host of other countries face horrendous inflation too, if (obviously) Brexit wasn’t the cause?
My guess would be causes beyond the control of all - Putin, opportunistic OPEC+ cartel, post pandemic supply chain issues.
Am I wrong, in that I think many highly vocal nsc'ers (probably twitter and facebook people too) talk about all these things ... but a silent majority just want to get on with their time on this rock? I can think straight off the top of my head ... extended family, neighbours, friends, clients...
There's a lot of truth in that, I literally only hear it here.
And I know/meet lots of folk including businessmen, also people who voted on either side at the time.
Imho that's due to the overwhelming majority just getting on with their lives or with tunnel vision for boozing/buying huge...
Macron (I know many French loathe him, especially socialists) was very classy and respectful e.g. when the Queen died. Travelling across several EU nations in the last few years, I found that Brits are liked, "when are you coming back to the EU?".
In this increasing dangerous world with 'bad...
At the time respected European area journalists such as Katya Adler and Anna Holligan said we still had lots of friends and friendly nations who were sad. Germans, Poles, Dutch, Swedes, Danes, Finns, Czechs. They meant politicians and business people. The Germans liked the way we traded and our...
Perhaps naively, a bit more optimistic here. Hoping we’re allowed to rejoin and do in a second Labour term.
The SNP are waning, with no Tory government, they can’t play that vote attracting card.
NI is complex way beyond/before Brexit. Demographics may shape its destiny.
The problem was that it made trading with our neighbours far more difficult. Our of fear of other nations following suit, the EU weren’t going to allow us the deals they have with Norway or Switzerland. The EU have suffered from Brexit too imho.
In addition many Europeans here went home...
The one silver lining, accepting that we can’t turn the clock back, is that 2/3’s of the nation with a young cohort to join them, know it wasn’t a success. The certainty, we know, forever. Without this, the issue would’ve trundled on for further decades, not just in the Tory party but in...
That’s not true about The City. Gordon Brown deregulated the sector after lobbying. He later admitted it was a mistake. He didn’t simply leave as it was in May 97. Take your pick from dozens of Guardian and Independent articles on this...
Gordon Brown, in his own words, spent the first few years of his control preaching fiscal prudence. He meant not embarking on a spending spree with far increased public borrowing.
Did he leave the poor with nothing?
Blair also got involved in a behind the scenes battle with Team Brown.
A good question. Firstly Brown, despite rose-tinted specs in this pasture, made some major gaffs. Slyly raiding ordinary folks future pension monies with the removal of tax credits on dividends received. Unintended...
Good point about the “Don’t want to talk about it any more”. I’d expand that to many, many millions of 16 to any age year-olds who have little to no interest in party politics, Brexit, the Middle East, Ukraine etc … chatting to folk in that bracket over the years, they’re generally happier. A...
So would I.
I get the impression from a few commentators that 60% is here already. Plus anecdotally loads of Brexiteers (not racists btw, just folk who over reacted to decades of chatter about overpaid MEP's and Commissioners) say to me that they regret their vote. Am I wrong about the 60%?
Plus the qualitative stuff e.g. joining long passport queues entering the EU. The only cute thing is passport stamps, reminiscent of travels past.
1. I wonder if there'll ever be another referendum? Imho we need a very strong Labour first 5 years, not ruined by new global crises and/or...
The housing crisis should dominate.
Brexit’s ill effects aren’t going away, but it doesn’t dominate just now. Hopefully anti Starmer Labour members/MP’s won’t use the subject as a way to disrupt his first term (pushing for an immediate referendum) when he’s going to have an awful load of cr@p...
