Some people seem to think defenders don't get tired and don't need the ball to be cleared to take the pressure off them for 30 seconds or to reset and get back in their position if they've been caught out. Opposition won't be scoring from 30-40 metres out.

That might be so if we weren't so prone to making awful sloppy passes. Better the ball is 40 metres up the pitch than turning it over inside and around the box.
