My main point was that, if it were an error, you can criticise it, but you can't criticise it on the basis of a guess of what might have followed.
What contrived reasoning to justify your criticism. If he'd saved it, the rest of the game from that moment on would have been completely different to what actually happened, and City might have gone on to score three more!
