I think there's two easy ways. Yours (which is how I think of it when I ponder these things) or to say whatever the number of points that the second placed team gets. As long as the contestants (am I taking this too seriously?) agree.

But the team that finished 2nd would have been promoted if they'd only got 83 points. As long as you both agree it's all good, I'm just saying there is more than one way to interpret it.
