It's not American, but did anyone catch 54 hours on BBC4 on Sat? The (true) story of a botched bank robbery and the operation to free hostages. It's absolutely gripping stuff. The second part is next week and it looks like it will be equally tense
The BBC one was called Oppenheimer. It's available on DVD but I'd love some channel to show it again
Thanks for the tip on Manhattan; going to try to find it
Oooh, where was that? I'd read about that series and hoped it would come over here. Is it on Netflix or on some weird channel.
The BBC should repeat the one they made in the 80s - with Sam Waterson as Oppenheimer and David Suchet as Teller, that was excellent
Nice article about the Stranger Things score. It was really evocative, almost as good as Mogwai's for The Returned

A littled cliched? I thought it was formulaic, badly scripted, badly acted and totally implausible
I gave up after first episode - the first Netflix dud
Yes, saw the last episode at the weekend and was pleased that the series fulfilled all its initial promise. There was some good acting (Winona aside): the girl playing Eleven (who's British incidentally) was extraordinarily good.
You're right that there's a lot of Spielberg reference but...
Anyone see the new Netflix serial, Stranger Things? It has Winona Ryder over-acting like hell in it but there's just enough of an air of mystery to keep the viewer engaged
Yeah we saw it, very promising. There are few plot holes (people behaving in ways they just wouldn't in real life) but most series have those. There's a terrific mix of story lines and the weather/environment plays a big part in the story. As it's Nordic, it will get compared with The Killing...
Is it next to the Cup Final money? :)
The series I've just started watching is Occupied. It's not US but Norwegian based on the intriguing premise that a Green government in Norway has stopped all oil and gas production and the EU and Russia have teamed up to take over the country. It looks...
Blimey, we should be keeping to the thread title, you must be new here :)
(This thread mentions The Killing, Top of the Lake, The Tunnel and Gomorrah, none of which are American, so it's scarcely an essential requirement)
Not seen any mention yet of The Legacy - the Danish series on Sky. Really, really impressed with it. It's a simple premise: a mother dies and there's an argument over her will but it's been spun out into something really dark. What it does particularly well is present all the characters...
Haven't looked through all this thread but haven't seen a mention of Justified. It's pretty good, a Western mixed with a cop show. There's some excellent dialogue and beautifully realised characters. Not a high profile show, but a damn good one
Like the look of the US version of House of Cards that starts next month. The original was superb, thanks to a fantastic performance from Ian Richardson, but this one stars Kevin Spacey and judging by the trailer, he looks like just as compelling a villain.

Excellent programme. Were watching this On Demand recently and was it was taken off without warning.
And, bizarrely, is one of the voices in Postman Pat.
This. One of the funniest shows ever. And, as far as I can see, not available in box-set. A tragedy.
