Lincoln imp, At the 'new' Universities I grant you - some might not have a PhD, because they do a lot more teaching - so maybe I should have been more precise myself. But in research-led Universities, research degrees are standard.

Lincoln Imp, Point of order please: to become a University Lecturer - one usually needs an MSc and PhD - so another 4 years at least *post* first degree and then some more...usuallly post-doctoral experience of another 2 to 3 years.
