Ha ha ... yeah. Although in many cases this season our matches were played anyway on some rather damp pitches.
Of course, the flipside of what I said about my junior cricket back in Aus was that if the first weekend was rained off, with a compliant opposition you could sneak in a match on the...
NSW grade cricket still using the same format as when I played as a kid, then. That's 35-ish years ago! Nothing quite so frustrating as having a really good batting performance on the first weekend and then seeing the second weekend washed out.
Slight nuance to this after going and looking at the Cricinfo scorecard (was hoping they had commentary, but alas no). WA lost their second wicket at 45. So they actually scored 8 runs for those 8 wickets that fell. The headline has been generated based on when they lost the third wicket...
Yes. Or at least, the indoor cricket rules I played in Australia that is the case. The ball is *always live* unless a wicket has been taken (and confirmed by the umpire). You can actually steal runs if the bowler is stupid enough to turn their back returning to their run up start point. In...
Brief post made via mobile phone was very brief 😋 . Alfriston insisted all through the morning that the pitch was ok to play on, so we travelled to the ground. Beautiful setting, although the ground itself is weird (it must have originally been on a bit of a slope before someone decided that the...
Similar story here at Uckfield. We've also been doing All Stars / Dynamos.
We ran our sessions on Sunday mornings, and had around 50 kids across all the age groups (All Stars starting at reception / KS1, and all the way up to our junior squads for playing ... which IIRC this season was 2x hard...
'grats!
Enjoyed reading your recaps here through the season. So thanks to you for starting the thread.
I've got 1 more match to come this weekend (our must-win against table-toppers Alfriston at their place). Thoroughly enjoyed my first (almost ... darned summer holidays!) full season since...
A win for Uckfield. We batted first on a dry pitch. After our traditional slow start (66/2 off 20 at drinks ... one of our better efforts), we kicked on to make 189 from our 40. Went out at 7 with 4 and a bit overs remaining, made 19 not out including only my second ever 6 in outdoor.
Our...
So was mine, so the family-vs-family event shall have to wait. With 2 games to play, it's still mathematically possible for us to avoid relegation. Rather a large mountain to climb, though - we'll need to win both and have other results go very much our way. Those two games are against the sides...
Hopefully making my return for Uckfield 1sts this weekend. Missed the last 3 due to holiday, but was timed well as my back is feeling much better. Not to mention my bout of covid the week before the holiday...
Anyway, could be a fun one. We play Laughton at theirs, a ground I know rather well...
Yep, I remember that. Theory was that slower bowler = less risk of injury, therefore a higher height allowance. But as you say, lots of confusion caused about what counted as a "slow" bowler. I recall one when I was at Laughton that was chest high, and the oppo claimed it wasn't a no ball...
Yeah, agree that judging it is difficult at times (and widely misinterpreted as being lower than intended). In my case it was definitely over waist height, ball only just took the bails, and I hadn't ducked low enough for my back (that the ball went over) to be below "waist height". I'm only...
I can, because I had it happen to me 20-ish years ago in Australia. Ducked what was a head-high full toss coming down the pitch, but it dropped like a stone after it went over my back and took the bails. *Both* umpires (same as lower leagues here - players from my side) called no-ball, but...
Good golly gosh... Uckfield 1sts played Kerala Strikers Sports Club this afternoon, at Temple Grove. We won the toss and elected to bowl first. That's about as far as the good news went.
I came into the match carrying a sore back, and as such selected to field / bat. In the end, I bowled a...
Played at Battle a few years back when I was still at Laughton. Tiny, tiny little ground. Was annoyed at the time, given I was still yet to hit my first outdoor 6 at the time and when I'd showed up I thought "today's the day!" only to be told ... nope!
Still just the 1 win this season. We had a shocker. Arrived at the ground (can't recall ever playing there before) and thought it looked lovely. On a bit of a slope, but not too dissimilar to the slope I played on for many years at Laughton. Pitch looked in good condition for playing. The...
Uckfield 1st's are off to Heathfield this weekend, up against Heathfield Park 2nds.
Heathfield currently 3rd in Sussex Cricket League Div 9 East. Uckfield dead last, but we're on a roll now - 1 win in 10 matches, we'll be looking to make it 2 from 11...
Ouch. The retire at 50 rule sounds a bit harsh personally, especially when it completely turns a game on its head like that. The sorts of pitches we've been playing on this season, batters need to take a bit of time to get in before trying to score. Lose a set batsman and the game can change...
Sounds like me. Spent the last two seasons bowling using painkillers due to having had a frozen hip. 2022 was weird, as it was still frozen, which meant I was bowling "over the top" of my hip instead of rotating. All of a sudden my natural outswinger was an inswinger, took a while to get used to...
