From my perspective, it is far better that the government are making less savings by ensuring those that need pension credit get it, than all pensioners get £300. I just don't get the unfair comments. All cuts are unfair. Something that used to be given to people, have it taken away. Child...

Time to leave this thread I feel. The rational view is not being debated., or acknowledged

Yeah it used to be that way... ( i note you didn't say vulnerable, which is normally the way that argument is phrased.......) But that was a very long time ago... And there weren't Winter Fuel payments back then.

I get it. It's just that we haven't lived in a world where that is the criteria for looking out for our most vulnerable for a very long time. For some reason the idea of taking £300 away from a pensioner is abhorrent, whereas there have been years of slashing spending on many other vulnerable...

In an ideal world no it isn't. I would also like there to be a well funded CAMHS service for those in need of support for their mental health. But there isn't. If you have enough money to cover your bills, that's not a terrible place to be. Pensioner or not.

Anyone who will not be able to pay their fuel bill , without it.

I share concerns for the future. I completely agree with the arguments that this wasn't the first demographic which sprang to mind when I heard the expression, "broadest shoulders". However.. The vast majority of people that will lose this payment, don't need it.

It depends on your outgoings and personal circumstances though doesn't it.? If you are living on your own and paying rent.... yeah you're f***ed. If you are in a couple and live in your own, paid off, property. It's a reasonable income.

Any pensioner on an income of £50k is (presumably) living off a very large pension. I'm not sure anyone who has access to that find of income in retirement, is in need of £300 to cover their bills.

My post was in response to a claim that support for this approach was purely based on political bias. The level of anger at this Labour measure is significantly more than the outrage to a Tory Policy aimed at denying benefits to disabled people who were judged as "Fit for work". The...

But the upper tax bracket is miles above the level of pensioners struggling to make ends meet. Dishing out a £300 handout for pensioners with a personal income of £50,000 is ridiculous. This is not protecting poor old dears. It's giving money to over 65s living off a very good income.

You've got me , with a well thought out deconstruction of my argument. I bow to your superior analysis of the arguments involved.

The Tory Party implemented some pretty Draconian policies on the Disabled community, as part of their austerity measures. There was plenty of outcry from various sources, but nowhere near as much as this.

Pensioners are not universally the most vulnerable in society, though are they? This is an archetype, which is doing a lot of heavy lifting in how this is playing out in the media. There will be a subset of pensioners who are very vulnerable, many of these may well be vulnerable due to other...

Yep - I don't disagree. It seems Starmer is prepared to take the PR hit to crack on with what he feels are priority. He's left himself wide-open for swipes from the left and right of the political spectrum. Let's be honest - whoever won the election was going to be in the shit as soon as they...

All pensioners do come from the generation that have benefited from low taxation and triple lock pensions. That isn't tarring them all with the same brush...

Sure - Political posturing. This is exactly why the young generation are disengaging from the political process. Hopefully the era of pandering to the middle-aged - older voter is over and politicians start focussing on policies to improve our country and not worrying what the Mail online...

Not going to respond to the 120,000 excess deaths from Austerity post? Many of those actually happened. You're talking about a theoretical 4000 for political posturing. Not a good look.
