Don’t be so negative. We got absolutely pummelled in the first test in 2005, and look what happened. We lost this one by fine margins, and that was with only having 3 full-time bowlers in the 2nd innings. Back at full strength and the series is still there to win.
Arse. We really should've won that. Having your spinner unable to properly bowl on the last day of a test is a real disadvantage. Root did ok, but he should've been taken out of the attack as soon as he'd got that wicket. Those sixes he went for really put the Aussies back on the front foot.
The Aussies have been reasonably consistent in going at around 3.5-4 an over, so if England weren't able to knock over these 7 wickets then they probably only need about 3-4 hours play to get the runs without increasing that rate, which should be dooable throughout the afternoon if the forecast...
I think you're all underestimating how hard this total will be for the Aussies to reach on a 4 day old pitch and in what will probably be swinging conditions going into the evening.
Had a lead of about 185-190 when I wrote that. That's a really strong position in the 3rd innings when you've got 5 wickets left and a reasonable tail that aren't going to get out without adding a fair few unless the pitch starts getting lively.
I'm going to call it and say that we're not losing this game from here. We're either going to carry on scoring runs and post a 280+ lead, which the Aussies will be unlikley to reach, especially with rain forecast tomorrow. Alternatively, they take the last 5 wickets cheaply, in which case it...
Deserve a bit of luck, if that's the right word, in this innings. The Aussies had a load of let offs yesterday, particularly that no ball when Broad overstepped by a gnat's Rizla paper.
Can't complain about either. Root was probably under instruction to spread the field and to keep the pressure on the bowler. Also, 46 runs from a batsman is a handy contribution in a 2nd innings regardless of how he got out.
Interesting, as I'd fancy us to defend anything over 200 on a 4th innings pitch. Last 9 wickets have fallen for about 200 runs, and it's not going to get any easier.
