Probably a stupid question, but actually having read around a bit, I'm slightly confused.

If I get a pair of Bluetooth headphones for my old man, I assume all I need for his TV is a 3.5mm jack bluetooth transmitter to plug into the TV right? There shouldn't be anything else required, the TV will just think it's got a set of headphones plugged into it, and the transmitter will transmit right!?

I've answered my own question haven't I!? :face palm:

These are the headphones I'm looking at, he doesn't need anything too fancy…

As long as you've got power for the transmitter plugged into the TV I can't see why it wouldn't work. Should be fine.

I'm probably wrong here but I think you need to check out whether the bluetooth adapter will work as you think because the only adapter I ever used, (admittedly for a PC), needed some software to be loaded onto the machine first. However I'm sure others will correct me and of course as the signal is only going one way, i.e. from the TV to the headphones it may work as you say.

My wife is very deaf and she uses Seinheister wireless earphones which plug straight into the headphone socket and are recharged on the base station. There very good, (she can continue to listen to the TV when she is about 100 yards away in the garden!), but there not cheap and I think from memory cost over £100 although there are a lot of cheaper ones on Amazon which dont cost anything like that and I'm sure are fine. Hers were recommended by the RNID so thats why we got them.

One last thing, if you haven't checked it out, make sure your TV doesn't cut out the TV speakers when earphones are plugged in because if so only the earphone wearer is going to hear anything! A lot of TV's have a setting in the menu to enable both the earphone socket and speakers to work simultaneously but make sure yours does. You could plug an ordinary pair of headphones in to check that.
