Yes there are speakers in there.

I distinctly remember standing in the loo listening to the half times or such like being broadcast

If there are not I must have bloody powerful ears becuase it was clear as day!!!

Afraid not. My source actually physically checked. You could probably hear the speakers from outside. Either that or you're losing it with old age... ;-)
