Do my contract with Virgin has ended and the TV, BB and landline had gone up to a ridiculous £120pm!
I want rid of the tv, never watch itand landline had been disconnected for nigh on 10 years. I want just the 500mb broadband and nothing else. On the website it is £31.99pm but new customers only. They offered me £48pm. Ideally I would go to another fiber company but there is none in my area at the moment.

I said I want to cancel and they said I have to give 30 days notice. I argued that I do not have a contact so why do I have to give notice? They wouldn't have it, bastards.

Anyway, I will go down to the £48pm option tomorrow but wtf do I need to give noticewhen I'm not under contract? I've been with them since 1993 as well.

I’m with VM. Guessing that’s a rolling one month contract, post long term contract which has expired. You do get something in return for the final payment, a month’s usage.

The main alternative is another provider using BT hardware to the house, is that feasible for you? We have that, fibre optic isn’t in our street yet, but it’s more than enough to handle several pc’s gaming at any one time. The award winning internet provider is:

I've also been with then since around 1993 - the Nynex days when they first started digging the streets up. We make good use of their TV services including watching lots of football on Sky Sports and TNT and Netflix, which is included. Broadband is generally excellent with drop outs being a rare event. We don't use the phone but that doesn't add any cost these days. I'm on a great deal at the moment - given what I've got - at £65.61 ... but that's due to go to £143 in October. I'll be making the usual call to them a month before to see what they offer. I know I'll need to tell them I want to cancel to get their best deal ... although I'm not expecting to get a deal anywhere near what I'm paying at the moment. We'll see.

But yes ... unfortunately, when you come to the end of your 'deal', you effectively go onto a 30 day rolling contract ... hence the need to give 30 days notice.

£48 for 500mb is a rip off - I've got Virgin 1Gb for £52. Means I don't need the TV package (all done via streaming) and everyone in the house gets a decent connection. No need for landline fees either.

I had murders with them and I'd been with them(or various guises) since dial up. Best thing I ever did was go fast fibre with Toob, I now pay £26 a month so as soon as they fibre your area, go for it.
To soften the blow, think of that £48 as only £1.60 ish a day

I pay £50 a month for broadband and TV including the Sky and TNT sports channels with Virgin. Don't take any rubbish off them.

Unfortunately I cannot find any fibre company that does my area. I have thought about going with a data/sim router but not sure on 5g coverage. My sons have 5g phones and they say it is good but no idea if it drops down at all.

I'm paying £115 a month. Like you, rarely watch the TV (freeview would be fine) and never use the landline. Tied in for ages too. Such a rip off.

VM charges …. negotiated a few months ago, ours is £68 per month, which includes TNT Sports and a new box with a high recording capacity. But no Sky Sports.

You do need to negotiate hard. Mine just ended @ £87 with all sports channels and Netflix. They said it would now be £199! After 3 hours online chat I got virtually same deal for guess what £87! Slight downside is Netflix with adds now but I can live with that. You will need to refuse offers until you get transferred to the customer relations team who have leeway to agree best deals.

When my (heavily discounted) first VM contract expired and the rate was due to almost double, they offered simple renewal for another 18 months at virtually the same cost (which was not far off half what Sky wanted). No haggling and no needing to cancel/threaten to cancel which was always the case with Sky who I’d been with for over 20 years. Broadband is almost 20x faster than Sky too and boxes never drop out (Sky Q was rubbish).

The first line of retentions team (online chat/phone) are relatively limited in what they can offer. Just say you want to give 30 days notice to leave them completely. Miraculously, within a few days you'll probably be called by someone from "the local team" who have a special price they can offer you, and it'll likely be in line with the new customer deal.

Worked for me a few months back, got 256gb for £23, when the best the online chat would give me was £32.

Annoying to have to jump through these hoops, I guess they rely on a lot of people settling for the first offer.

I was with VM. Would constantly try and put my bills up, until I would tell them to cancel my contract, and then voila! I would be offerred a discount. Got fed up in the rnd and binned them off. I pay £29 pm for bb with Toob, and about £15 for basic Sky tv. It acutally costs me a bit more now, but just wanted rid of VM. I will bin off Sky when my contract ends as don't like them either or anything they stand for, but wanted shot of Virgin. Yes, I am a v v grumpy git.

I’m in the process of moving back to Burgess Hill and believe Virgin Media installed the hardware across the town for FTTH. Can anyone in BH confirm whether you are locked into VM for fibre or can other providers piggyback on the line?

I think you are out of your 12/24 original contract period but unfortunately I think they will then have, as others have suggested, a rolling monthly contract which needs 1 months notice to cancel. I think VM are one of the worst for price rises at the end of an initial “discounted period”. Have a look at Sky as I moved from BT (BB with BT sport Tv) at about £68/month in February to Sky (BB plus Sky sports) for £68 ( increasing to £75 next month). My BB with Sky is excellent and is £20/month on my bill.
