He could not do worse! We have never replaced him properly.
Personally I'd like all the 2005 Ashes players to make some sort of last hurrah comeback.

Might be tricky for Vaughan and Simon Jones, their knees were made of papier mache at the time.

And Harmison might struggle to fit his leg through the waistband of his playing days now.

And I don't want to see or think about Geraint Jones ever again.

Alright, now that I think about it it's just Trescothick and Collingwood. :lolol:

So I am not the only one who can’t stand jones. I was always team Read and we won that ashes despite jones’ drops and missed stumpings.

I was a year younger than Read who went to a local school (he was Torquay grammar school where I was a local comp). I played up a year and clean bowled him once. It was my claim to fame that he ruined when I was at uni and he ducked that Yorker. Weirdly our paths crossed again a Couple of years ago because our daughters were team mates in the midlands hockey team and became friendly over the weekend of competition. Didn’t get to chat to him until towards the end for a trip down memory lane. Good times.

I seem to recall Read was close to a recall but then did something silly against mushy at hove and smashed something up.

He did get a recall in 2006, played a couple of tests, got randomly dropped for the first three tests of the 2006/07 Ashes and then got brought back for the last two after Jones got a pair at the WACA. Should have played more, but we always seem to have a few wicketkeepers we could say that about.

He did have a complete meltdown against Mushy (the gist of which seemed to be that it was unfair he was too good for him, but I may be making that up). But I think they'd moved onto Prior by then.

My only encounter with Read is spending about 5minutes stood next to him waiting for a pizza at Welbeck in Nottinghamshire not long after he retired. Seemed a nice guy, I think he was with one of his bairns so I didn't say anything. I was more confused that when I got back to my seat and met my Notts member friend he was completely uninterested in this. The weirdo.

I was at headingley the match when Read got his recall. I think he got a 50 and was almost squashed by Inzy when he fell into his stumps. That was the season he had the gloves and it all kicked off at the oval. As you say he was then dropped for GoJo who did nothing for Kent in that ashes series when Gilo also played over Monty. Monty and Read came in when gilo and jones were as bad as expected. And both struggled.

My understanding is Read’s card was marked when he was in the West Indies and was keeper and Vaughan had said free day so Read went out for the day with his mrs while everyone else stayed at the pool. Apparently not very good at reading between the lines. Jones was friendly with the powerful character like Fred, harmy and Vaughan. Read a bit quieter.

I do find it weird how we talk about wicketkeepers being picked for their batting rather than their keeping nowadays, and then Jones ends up averaging about 23. Buttler and Bairstow both low/mid 30s. The keepers like Prior and de Kock who average up around 40 are still pretty unusual.

In other matches there is also Jimmy bowling with a new ball to try and get two wickets in last 7 overs. Durham should cruise home against Notts which is incredible after how that game has gone. Long live champo cricket.
