Decided tonight's the night to eat the M and S pudding in the cupboard. Only 2 years out of date.

Out of date…sure it was M&S and not a Wetherspoons pud?

Wonderful. I normally stock up after Christmas when they’re cheaper. M&S - fine but I have to watch out for any with pecans (allergy issues).

Christmas puddings cannot go out of date they last forever if unopened the date is just a guide
This. Sometime back a while (maybe the 1980s?) some tinned Christmas Puds from Scott's 1912 Antarctic expedition were found, opened and eaten. They were fine.

Christmas pud is traditionally prepared in the first week of January. With a silver sixpence. And stored till the end of the year.

There's some footage of Peter Scott (Scott's son) eating some of the tinned food from that expedition in 1957, so 45 years later at the time.

A deep delve into the larder and my collection of Christmas puddings are uncovered. Only 3 of them at the moment with eat by dates of 2016, 2020 and fresh as a daisy - 2026. This comes about as my daughter used to receive a Christmas hamper at work. Daughter doesn't like them, Mrs BS doesn't like them so it's just down to me and there's too much for just me so I have to wait for visitors to arrive. Trouble is when they do it's summer, and who wants Christmas pudding then!

Dates on food come in 3 forms:
Use by
Best before
Display until

If your pud was a best before date, this is just the manufacturer saying their product is still safe to eat, but might not be as they would like you to enjoy.

Crisps are a good example of this. They don't go off in terms of not safe to eat, but they do go off in terms of not so nice to eat (unless you particularly like soft crisps)
