Does that truncheon look anything like the one I have hanging up by the fireplace in the study?

I also have a truncheon. It’s RAF issue apparently, and inherited from my nan. She kept it under her bed, to ward off burglars. She was never burgled and neither have I been. So it works.

I've got a couple of little objets that seem to fit the thread. Not terribly old, maybe not even terribly interesting, but I like 'em 😊

The one on the left is a Pythagorean Cup, bought in the town of Pythagoreio on the island of Samos. Fill the cup to the level marked on the inside and it acts like a normal drinking vessel. Fill beyond that mark and the entire contents drains out a hole in the bottom of the cup.

The one on the right is a Penny Lick (late 19th century). In the days before somebody the bright idea of inventing the ice cream cone, you'd go along to your local ice cream vendor, he'd hand you a Penny Lick with a scoop of ice cream in. The glass made it look more than it was. You'd lick the glass clean and hand it back to the ice cream vendor who would (hopefully!) clean it ready for the next customer.

This concludes my Show'n'Tell for today
