The scouts said he was poor and couldn’t handle the pace of the premier league, the data said he was in the top of his optics in the championship. Maybe it’s time to stop playing moneyball and listen to some people who’ve played the game.
I always assumed that although we are data-based in our transfer dealings that there was a human element as well, validating what the data was telling us. As it should be. But even if we were entirely relying on the data and optics and what-not, surely some of the data that was collected would include details of the player's speed, to the nth. degree of MPH.

I’ve not seen his cameo, nor by the sounds of it do I want to :/

From what I’m reading it sounds like we’re talking about a Kerry Mayo meets George Parris hybrid with a similar turn of pace and a gut that would play even a middling paced striker on-side, if indeed he could turn around fast enough for that to be a factor.

He can’t pass, he can’t run, he can’t defend, he’s way too short, and he can’t jump, he’s too wide… he looks like your uncle playing beach football in his flip flops well into his forties after about 5 beers 🍺

He is hands down the worst signing we’ve ever made based on £ for £ value and our current level.

He makes Big Jurgs seem like a brilliant signing, who would’ve been a better option to play CB himself last night.

It’s a disaster for us, a catastrophe for our recruitment model and one that could bring about the end of our PL tenure if not threaten the entire existence of the club.

Have I got that right?

Absolutely nailed on to start vs Palace then.

😂

Having a good positional sense and passing skills is not enough for a defender at this level.

You have to be able to run like an Olympic sprinter.

How many of the goals we have conceded this season have been down to a slow back four?
Which made playing a high line even more puzzling, when there isnt any real pace at the back bar Lamptey when he plays.

Looking online and it says he is 6ft so can only assume its his dating profile and he rounded up.
I thought he started fairly calmly in the 1st few minutes with a couple of nice passes but as soon as the 1st mistake happened it seemed to really affect him.
Pace wise I think O'Grady has a chance to win a race, which is never a good sign.
Agree with the comment suggesting he could be a CDM which I think could be a good position for him. Covers the pace issues whilst offering the chance for Baleba to be realised

The real question for me is why are we not valuing pace as an asset for defenders? I get that pacier players are relatively more expensive but surely our fabled data could factor that in- ie “actually this kid will need to really work on his passing and he can be a bit rash but he’s super quick so there’s potential there”. You can’t really get quicker. You can learn to pass, you can improve your positional play etc etc.
Seems like such a blind spot.
Or we could do something really crazy- spend 30-40 million on a decent defender rather than another winger.

Maybe not Olympic sprinter speed but it would be nice if he could shift quicker than you , HWT

Terrible misjudgement by him for goal and such a shame on debut. Lay off far to early to make judgement,

I thought he was someone that had jumped on the pitch for a laugh/bet. He stood out for all the wrong reasons, you have to feel sorry for him, who on earth said he could play our level of football?
Terrible subs by the manager.

People keep comparing him to JPvH as having a rocky debut, but I really don't think the two are comparable

van Hecke had had a year on loan at another club but that was his only real taste of professional football. Cashin has played over 100 games for Derby County. He's not some youngster we've plucked from the U23s and asked to "do your best, son", he's supposed to be a first-team ready footballer who we paid good money for. We signed him at a point when Igor was already out for the season and knowing that Dunk and Webster were both dodgy on the fitness front, he's only ever been one twisted ankle away from the first XI.

I am not, and from what I can see on this thread nobody else is, writing him off as a player for us in perpetuity. But the club will have expected better, and there's only so far excuses can go. He was shocking tonight, and we need to accept that. You can claim it was first day nerves or rustiness or whatever, but to deny he was very poor does a disservice to him and the club, as well as making those claiming it look foolish.

JP played half a season in Dutch 2nd tier, one season Dutch top tier, and one season in the Championship (for a team fighting for promotion).

Cashin has played 1 half season in the Championship (for a team fighting relegation), 2 seasons in League 1 and another half season in the Championship (for a team fighting relegation).

Sussex but not by the sea
Worryingly he came on because Dunk was knackered and we have no other option. In less than 2 days we play Crystal f***ing Palace, so the chances of Dunk being 90 minutes ready on Saturday when he wasn't yesterday must be very slim. Which means.........

Can Wieffer play CB?

I've got a Derby STH friend and have shared a lot of the comments made about his debut, and he just replied.

"Hey up mate... oh dear, things can only get better for him although I agree about the pace element!! Other than that he's brilliant!!

Lets hope he's right, but his size and shape does look problematic.

He posted this, but hasn't allowed comments. Looking at another post from this week, there's Brighton fans saying "ignore the comments" so God knows what people have been saying.

Comments put today on a post from a few days ago.

He won just about every header, short or not. I guess I’m not prepared to write off a new player based on that. JPVH faced similar comments I am sure on his early appearances as did Dan Burn.. I am sure we both hope you’re wrong and then a face palm will be appropriate 👍
Did he win every header?

I only remember him going for 3 and he lost all of them…

I think we both said it at the time.
Still early days for Cashin, but I know which I think has a higher ceiling….
Most ceilings must seem pretty high to Cashin.
