Oh you've done it now. Some snarky type will be along in a minute to tell you - like they told me - that "ignorance is no excuse and its been happening in football for years". Despite it being enough of an unknown to warrant its own very recent BBC article
Well it probably hasn’t been happening for years, as it really depends on when Ramadan is happening that year. Many years Ramadan won’t fall during the football season. And it also will only affect matches when the sunsets during the game, so probably very few games are actually affected even if it is Ramadan month. It just so happened that this year, two FA cup games have been involved, so it makes it more news worthy I guess. Additionally, we don’t always have Muslim players.

We didn't know what it was (from far away from where it was happening) but it looked to be some kind of extended drinks break - and that's indeed what was happening.

Why do they have to break their fast during a game?
Because they haven’t eaten or drunk and fluids since sunrise. Their energy levels will be depleted and are likely to dehydrated. I don’t think I’d be able to focus on watching the game, having not had any fluids for over 12 hours, much less play competitive sport at an elite level

Would appear to have been a case for maybe having them on the bench until after 18:28 or whatever it was

It doesn’t really work like this. Millions of Muslims fast during Ramadan, and continue physically demanding work as normal, stopping to break their fast where able when sun goes down.
Had they been benched, due to observing Ramadan, that would be discrimination.

Maybe an option if our more well-fed players could stay fit for five minutes. With Wieffer (again) injured and Hinshelwood needing to play RB, It was either Gomez or Ayari and none of them were going to play 120 minutes. Maybe a bit more options for Minteh but with his form and March out again... can't bench him, and he was ok imo.

“"An approximate time will be agreed when the pause will take place, and it will not be used as a team drinks break or tactical time-out."

Oh yeah?

So it’s only Muslims who get a drink is it ?
One rule for one innit.
If you say you’re Christian they throw you in jail nowadays.

Can't find it mentioned anywhere else on here. What was that all about. And why weren't the fans told what was going on? Very poor communication. Someone said it was something to do with ramadan.

Sunset today was around 18:29pm - so it would be at the next break in play.

Was mentioned in the thread on the refs performance yesterday - https://www.northstandchat.com/threads/worst-refereeing-performance-since.412781/post-11539733

Muslims fast during daylight, and break fast at sundown. During years where Ramadan is over summer then it makes days very long for fasting. During winter months it makes it much shorter. This is the custom, the player can’t choose when to break their fast for convenience.
My mate who observes Ramadan gave me a very compelling rationale for fasting and its purpose. It is to put yourself in the position of
people in this world who have very little and can hardly afford to eat, such is their poverty. Empathy is what it's all about. I think that is a noble
way to live myself.

That’s actually not the case. I’ve been with devout Muslims who decided they had to eat during Ramadan.

There is a prayer they can do to get around not having to fast.
