The match was drawn. The tie was then resolved in the specified way, with a penalty shootout, and the unbeaten run continues IMO. In times past, matches were sometimes decided by tossing a coin. Would a lost coin toss be classed as a defeat?

No different to the away goals rule where you could have drawn away 1-1 and 2-2 at home but lost the tie on away goals. You've still not lost either match.

The penalty shoot out is just a way of deciding the tie when the match has finished as a draw.

Yes.

Match was a draw.

The team that won the separate penalty competition went through to the next round.

What does your dad think? That will settle it.

Arguably since Christmas we've either beaten or remained unbeaten in matches against clubs that are

2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, (we're 7th) 8th, 10th and 11th
Playing 9th (Villa) on Wednesday and Palace (12th) on Saturday.

OR we've lost twice to the team that are third !

We lost and are out the cup, we can’t claim to have an unbeaten run, that’s just clearly not true.

However we are on an unbeaten run in the league so let’s try and keep that going.

We lost.. The players won't feel like they're on an eight game unbeaten run

I understand the point in hand, but you cannot go out in the cup unless you lose a match. Albion lost on penalties. This we have a defeat.
