My son finishes his GCSE’s at the end of June and we asked him where he wanted to go. First answer was Japan, but we can’t afford that right now, and his second choice was Florida. We’ve been before and the missus wasnt overly keen to go again, so as a compromise we’re doing 10 days in Orlando and then heading up to Toronto for 4 days at the end of the trip. Looking forward to it all. I really like the USA, the sort of madness of the place holds a bizarre fascination

Congrats for that. I'd love to do the Pacific Coast Highway. I only met friendly people both in Houston and Austin, poles apart despite both in Texas.

America's bathwater might well be particularly toxic and unappealing at present, but there's still no need for the baby to go as well.

If one's going down that moral line, a few Turkish holidays should probably be put on hold until journalists, mayors and protesters are released from jail.

Was there a week before the last election, in Pennsylvania, most people we met seemed to plan to vote Republican out of loathing for the Democrats. Didn’t find anyone particularly MAGA, and was possible to have reasonable conversation, that said, most of the time we avoided talking politics and had a brilliant time. Will be going back in September 2026.

Two recent holidays to NYC for us, before that one in Florida. Loved the Americans we met, a real melting pot of cultures, incredibly hard working folk with origins from across the world. Intelligent, engaging, warm, got the impression that Trump and his ilk were thought of as an embarrasment.

Never been but has always been on the list to experience.

The current administration wouldn’t make me reconsider going even though they are deranged dangerous ****s, I am sure there are plenty of decent people to engage without out there.

Until I start seeing Kissimmee redactions on club shirts I’ll assume I’m not in the minority on this point

We were on the West coast in 2017 when Trump was trying to f*** up the world the first time.

Whilst waiting to get on a ride in Disneyland, a cast member started talking to us and, when he caught our accents, (For those that don't know - Disneyland is essentially a park for locals, relative to tourist-packed Disney World), he said "I'm so sorry - please don't judge us all by our president", before reaching into a pocket and giving my son a gift.

The weird thing about my life, is I have never, not once, met anyone who describes themselves as 'left' or 'right'. Most of us have varied viewpoints on a huge variety of topics and issues. And when people create these groups like 'right wing idiots' and 'libs', it seems to describe something that doesn't actually exist as a grouping of people.

We’ve done these tours a few times, they’re incredible, including three last April.

We were the only non Americans apart from an Irish couple, everyone else were visitors from across the 50, plus the amazing tour guides. We kinda touched on US politics, I was circumspect so as not to annoy on their internal business, but everyone was clearly anti MAGA. Americans are passionate their family histories, proud of their immigrant forebears …. Trump‘s obsession with certain races and immigrants riles.

It is an inadequate way to describe most people as we are usually more nuanced than that.

I also believe it is a totally inaccurate way to describe the people having second thoughts about going to the US at the moment.

But then on most levels the post you quoted lacked significant insight.

Out of interest, as someone who has no plans to go to the US anytime soon (if I am doing an expensive long haul flight it will be to Brighton), what are peoples reasons for not wishing to visit.

I would understand not wanting to out money into the US economy or be seen to support the government. More so I would imagine that people would be concerned about ending up in an immigration detention centre for having the wrong visa or social media posing history, as seems to be happening a fair bit.

I'd happily go, but it's expensive, so it makes more sense to go somewhere else. Went last year two weeks before the election (but to a very blue city, so might not be representative of the other areas) and avoided political discussions.

Was last there for a trip to Vegas (for the NFL, rather than the usual Vegas stuff people would go for) in December last year. More than likely will be my last trip there until the orange oaf is out of office, though.

Despite it being one of the big melting pot cities packed with tourists from across the US, the only people who tried to talk politics with me when they heard my accent were dyed-in the-wool MAGA types. Nothing too bad besides one guy at a dive bar who loved the sound of his own voice, talking about how "Kamala would have started WW3" among other delusions - I just tried to blank him out as much as possible while watching the American Football game that was on the TV.

My UK cousin (+US wife) lives in Petaluma, Sonoma County, north of San Francisco. Been out there for 18 years now. I was out there last May to see him (got a solo pass from the family.. boom!) and I had an incredible week.

One, we are super close and I miss him, but out there we spent three glorious days hiking parts of Yosemite, arsed around in various classic British cars he owns and got smashed on cycling vineyard tours in beautiful northern California. I even got taken out in his mate’s light aircraft and got to fly it across stunning valleys and lakes. An amazing and lucky trip I will never forget. Along the way, I met so many wonderful, warm, friendly (and apologetic) Americans that it reaffirmed my faith in the country to be honest. Sure, there were one or two cranks/angry folk but they were a clear minority from this particular experience.

I’m buggered if that disgusting, narcissistic, wannabe dictator and his administration of incompetents, bullies and traitors are going to stop me going back again.
(just need to remember to wipe the anti-Trump memes off my phone before immigration : -)
