I had the pleasure of watching Albion Rovers (Coatbridge) in August 2023, in what turned out to be their last campaign before relegation to the Scottish Lowland League.

It's a lovely old ground and the people I met were really friendly.

Thousands depart from the town every weekend to follow Rangers and Celtic, instead of supporting their local club.

They're struggling a bit and are doing their best to raise some much-needed funds.

There's a new initiative where you can become a member for a tenner a month.

Thousands of people aren't going to be leaving Coatbridge to support Rangers - it's a small, mainly Catholic town. If you include the adjacent town of Airdrie, maybe.
I'm guessing the club is a merger, maybe between Coatbridge or Airdrie Rovers and Airdrie or Coatbridge Albion?

I met plenty of people in Coatbridge, of the blue persuasion, who would go to Ibrox, but not Cliftonhill.

The club isn't a merger between towns. Without being rude, a 10 second google search could've answered your question.

The club is older than our own club. Yes, that includes the Albion part.

Things have certainly changed since the 1970s then when I used to visit Glasgow (Springburn) a lot. My stepfather was from there and there was a Glaswegian expression at the time: "As lonely as a Coatbridge Protestant." :lolol:

That's the issue for small club. When the Second Class Fans go to their glory team.

I remember having a conversation with a Bradford Park Avenue fan about their demise. 'The problem was, everyone was buggering off to watch Leeds'.

I went to home game there in about 1991. A gate of 250!

Coatbridge was purportedly Celtic (other than the family we were with), Airdrie Proddies. All the football fans in the two adjoined towns went to Ibrox or Parkhead.

I also saw a game at Airdrie's old ground.
There were 372 when I was there.

Their ultras spent most of the game bouncing around chanting 'f*** the Tories', so I immediately warmed to them.

No they were formed 140 years ago, and spent 120 years in the SFL, all as Albion Rovers. Airdrie (now officially named Airdrieonians again) have been around for years, even if they had to be reformed after the original Airdrieonians FC folded, is totally unconnected.

Feel free to be rude.
Or do what I did.
About ten years ago <sigh>
People who gob off on a whim without checking basic facts or caveating that they may be wrong should get in the sea.
Other opinions are, of course, available.
