Slam door trains were so cool, none of this “doors close 30 seconds before departure” nonsense
Loved the slam door buffet car.
Business people wrecked on that car every night. When I worked in London, and went to night games, great pre match banter in my blue & white stripes amongst the sharp suits.
Seem to remember going back up to London in the morning, you could get a bacon sandwich.

Once upon a time, going up to London you could get a beautiful freshly cooked kipper for breakfast on the train!

My first proper job was in London in 1987. I used to commute up from Brighton and if I was slightly late, you walked through the train to find a seat. I can still visualise the smoke in the buffet car carriage! A bit like walking through a fog.

And there were some with no corridor. Once you were in that compartment, you were in!
Don't forget the one carriage that had an isolated row of five seats you could lie down on. A godsend to find first when getting the 4am train back from Victoria.

Used it hundreds of times when living in Shoreham and working in Brighton until I got my driving licence.
No photos and really only one memory stands out after a late night out.
I bought the obligatory donor kebab with chilli sauce from just down the road and was launching into my first bite when the bottom fell out of the pitta bread along with all the contents onto the platform floor.
I was not a happy bunny.

The most unhealthy but tasty bacon sandwich. Was two slices of toast with what appeared to be a pack of butter melted into it filled with bacon.

Might be corrected on this.
Back in the 70s there were more pubs in one square mile of the station than anywhere else in England.
Windsor tavern was a pre match venue.
Remember the Bosun !
That's a questionable claim! In the 1970s Basingstoke was designated as a New Town, and a whole square mile or so, the heart of the town, was demolished, flattened to the ground to build a new centre over the rubble, At least twenty pubs were included that massacre in the square mile, maybe more. I'd drank in most of them too!

I caught the last train home from London after a Bunnymen concert at Kilburn Ballroom. I absolutely reeked of sweat, dry ice, fags and beer. Ran from the Underground and threw myself into a compartment just as the train was leaving. It was one of those without a corridor, and some quite posh sedate folk in the other seats - so they were trapped with me for some while, and I felt quite sorry for them!

Once tried to have a drink in every pub within half-a-mile of the quadrant in a week. Failed.....

I used to do something similar. Worked near Victoria Station so quite handy for getting down to Hove in time for a 7:45 kick off. (Why were those evening midweek games at the Goldstone 7:45 and not 7:30? Made quite a difference when you had to get back to London after).

Used to sprint after final whistle to Hove, get back to Brighton station after the match, just enough time to get down to that Chippy/Kebab Shop down Queens Road then back up to the station to get a train back up to London.

Happy Days.....

They absolutely need to open up the steps down to Trafalgar Street again. Give the old khazi a very thorough deep clean and it would make a nice bar/cafe:
Even after all these years, the smell would be well remembered (still is) and drinking beer there would feel like drinking piss.

Last train to Victoria 11:10, no? 11:40 or thereabouts Saturdays and an early 10:30 Sundays?

Days of pure bliss and excitement even though we were shite it didnt matter. Rolling up seeing who would turn up and how shady it was going to be in some northern backdrop.Shame we dont get them days back again. All about what boozer we were going to go in when we got there with a bit of football thrown in.

What days they were I feel like crying.
That has made me think. What days they were. Two hours sleep on a Friday night having promised yourself you’ll only have a couple. Up at 4.30am and back on it.

Darlington away (back in the days of Feethams) was my
Favourite. Can anyone please tell me the name of that pub right outside Darlington station that opened at 10.30am with happy hour straight out of the gate. £1 a pint at 10.30am on a Saturday morning.

The best away day ever. Honestly as much as love the incredible things the club has achieved, there’s a sick little part of me that yearns for the days of Darlington, Carlisle, Torquay, Scarborough and all the others.

Some of the greatest memories I have. Some of the fondest. But by God I was a twat 😂😂😂😂

Excellent stuff, but blimey hair styles in 1972 were appalling! Funny also how the group missed filming around The Lanes and the Pavilion but lingered over shots at the station...
They probably just ran the film down whilst waiting for their train home!
