M-I-L has a Sony Bravia TV bought 4 years ago. In the recent storms they had a power surge and the TV stopped working.

We tried various things to fix it advised on YT channels, factory reset, update software, re-install software etc... all no good.

Spoke to Sony as sort of a last resort. After explaining the situation for about 5 mins they asked for proof of purchase which we got printed again from Currys and sent it to Sony.

Sony contracted them today to say they're sending out a brand new TV that's the new updated version of their model as a replacement under their 5 year warranty (which the M-I-L didn't know about). £1300 on Amazon.

My experience with these big companies has been that they try to get out of everything but Sony have been brilliant.

Interesting. Whilst the warranty is indeed for 5 years, it would be Currys that you should have dealt with, and I'd expect them to take weeks to attempt a repair and then offer a reduction on a new TV.
So well done Sony.

Handy to know as my three-year old Bravia has just stopped running BBC iPlayer and it seems from forums that it is a reset / firmware or Android operating system problem but tackling those things hasn't solved it yet.

So well done Sony.
My experience with Currys is thus:
  • 18 month old Samsung TV develops a fault (black lines across half the screen).
  • Go into Currys, they refuse point blank as it’s “over 1 year old”.
  • Letter to Currys head office. I point out to them that under the Consumer rights act 2015 they are liable for up to 6 years and that as a “premium brand” a Samsung should be expected to last that long.
  • Currys reply stating no
  • I send another letter stating that unless they reconsider I will begin small claims court action.
  • Currys offer to have a look at it for £50 and fix it if “economically viable"
  • I send a “letter before action” stating they have seven days to repair, replace or refund.
  • Currys offer, “as a goodwill gesture” to waive the £50 charge.
  • Currys’ repair contractor collects TV, has it two days and says it’s fixed. FIVE MINUTE JOB apparently.
I wonder how many people would have been as tenacious or would have given up and bought a new telly.

i once bought a North Face base camp tent -top of the range malarky cost best part of a grand back in 1980. At trhe time North Face were a serious outdoor brand,rather than a fashion one and this tent was designed as a serious expedition tent, not two weeks at the local scout camp in Burgess Hill

Anyway, i duly abused this tent, camped on ice, african plains, it went to Scotland in winter, alps, all over. It then got put away wet after I lent it, and some TEN years later, was discovered at my sisters (who swore blind shre retrurned it)

I took it out and not unsurprisingly the ground sheet had perished. I sent it back to North Face for a quote on getting a new ground sheet sewn in. About three weeks later I got a call from the shop who returned it saying a BRAND NEW tent had arrived for me, we a note from North Face saying their tents do not perish

That tent has now lasted some 15 years and is still going strong.

I’ve had a few TVs go wrong over the years (including this week) and the guy at Teleview never fails to sort it - unless it’s going to cost more than £100 when he simply advises you to bin it.

Call Sony Customer Services and see what they say. Honestly they completely restored my faith in mega companies with their excellent service and no quibble replacement.

I would try Samsung direct. It's what we did.

Quick Googley check and they offer 5 years on their TVs too.
