I recon they should change the offside rule to run the line from the front of the attackers grounded foot against any part of the defenders body that can legally score a goal (like it is now) ..

this would eliminate a lot of the marginal calls being ruled out. Plus it's also how an attacker judges the timing of his run anyway. Seems fair to me

The main issue is that Linos and referees tend to defer to VAR for tight offsides, so the "goal" tends to be given.

I was surprised the flag hadn't gone up as I thought it was an obvious offside (north stand - west side)
It was actually much closer than I thought it was.

That's the bigger issue in my eyes, the law / rules / whatever says that if the attacker is level with the last defender, he is onside. Under any reasonable definition Gross is level with the defender. As was Dunk at Everton, as was McGinn yesterday, as was the case in so many stupidly disallowed goals.

I guess it doesn’t matter what the rule should be - if it is daylight then there will be var decisions saying that there was daylight underneath an armpit and we are back to where we are now.

The thing is the players know the rules, they should err on the side of caution or risk goals not being allowed.

If a speed limit is 30 and you are going 30 - are you under, at, or over the limit? 😂 I have no idea / best to go 29 I recon.

@Browncow155 is meaning that they would like the grounded feet that to be used. Gross's feet are both level/behind the last defender (or two).

Or, chips in all players' boots (heal or toe?) plus a chip in the ball, automate it. Forget the possibility of scoring with other parts of the body...it tends to be the feet that score most goals and transport the body around anyway.

Unfortunately, GPS would be less accurate than VAR lines.

Currently the Galileo's positioning service, the High Accuracy Service (HAS) is now freely available to users around the globe. It targets a positioning accuracy better than 20 cm in the horizontal domain and 40 cm in the vertical domain, in nominal conditions of use.

20 cm is less accurate than half the width of a football boot.

What I would like to see is a body point standard - don't use a knee just because that happens to be the furthest outstretched limb. Should be something more central. Maybe belly buttons or similar?

Hopefully the semi-automation of offsides will see the time cut down. That was the issue on Sunday IMHO, not the decision (he was offside and correctly called as such).

I'm quite happy to regularly lambast referees and there was a sense of absolute ridiculousness around the length of time it took to make two fairly clear offside decisions to disallow both Gross' goal and McGinn's, but the decisions themselves were inarguably correct.

Both were so clearly offside when the image came up in line. No toenails, no "are the lines touching". It's not a contested call.

Great info 👍.
I'm leaning towards just using feet: most goals come from them, and they transport the body.

To be fair, I think 20cm (so actually 40cm maximum including both players) is fine for the intended purposes of both the offside rule and VAR.

Yes, how far do we go...5mm? 1mm? when they're making a subjective decision of where a player's shoulder ends to draw a vertical line down 🤷‍♂️.
A lot of this discussion reminds me of Dolby noise reduction/ the perfection of hifi etc...where our ears (certainly mine anyway!!) can't discern the frigging improvement anyway!
