If there was any grass left on our lawn I'd probably not mow it in May. Unfortunately, moss took it over this winter and it's completely f***ed, worst I've ever seen it.

Really really bad this last winter, had to buy a decent scarifier and has made a huge difference. Bit of a pain doing it but the results are worth it.

Too late, did it this morning. Always leave some long grass around my little pond though for the frogs and for hedgehogs to doze in.
Also have plenty of wild poppies, borage, primroses, aliums and still have bluebells out - The Hawthorn is in flower, some flowers on my old English shrub rose (open cup so bees love it). Ceanothus tree is coming out too which bees adore so not a complete environmental disaster.

IMHO it's an all in our all out situation.
If people really want to ditch the lawn and invite pollinators then sprinkle a load of wildflower seed over it and leave it for the summer. Not mowing for a month will just produce a shabby and shite looking lawn.

I mowed many lawns today. Its my job so unless someone wants to pay my wages for a month for doing nothing, I will carry on.

That’s the other reason I gave up on the ornamental lawn. Record breaking wet winters have been heavenly for moss.

As we know he reads this site, I'm now expecting Paul Barber to open a lawn mower repair shop on the 1st June in readiness for the mad rush that no mow may must cause. Message on the door will read "Please remove engine fuel caps on entering the building"

How about the weeding, the raking, the seeding, the raking again, the moaning "What have you done to the lawn, it looks awful" followed by more raking, more seeding and more moaning. Only for it to be just as shit a year later with just the week of it looking half decent.
It's utterly pointless and soul destroying in equal measure. The perfect job for a bored retiree.
