I think a lot of the players mentioned in this thread are decent players and could definitely do a job for other teams but just not for a team with our reset ambition.

It looks like we keep the marquee players Mitoma and Pedro this year thanks to the Caceido sale last summer. However we should be able to sell a bunch of players and maybe rake in about £50m or so between them with Undav being the biggest earner.

Looking at the contracts...

Obviously Fati won't be offered another loan deal!

Out of contract:
Milner and Lallana - surely let go or moved into coaching positions
Welbeck looking to be extended for another year

Players moving into last year of their contracts:
Lamptey - surely sold, last chance to recoup any money
Moder - Same as Lamptey (Capology says he's on £10k a week, so could be easy to sell). Unless he has another year option that they might use to try to increase his value before a sale next year
Groß / Veltman - Assume they might stay for a final year before moving on
McGill - Not going to be able to sell him, maybe a loan if we want to swap around the keepers we have available

Two years left on contract - this group includes Steel, so he's not being moved on. Guess he'll stay as back-up (second or third choice)
Webster - Capology says he's on £55k a week, so surely the only way he goes is if a Championship club come in for him, he actually wants regular playing time and doesn't mind taking a pay cut

I think there is clearly talent he’s still a kid trying to play the leading role on a football pitch. Physically he is outstanding - decision making he is still like Bambi in headlights. I addition I don’t believe he is a DM maybe more box to box. When he drives into space he opens up distances and drives at the defence he’s great to watch. When he learns to pick the right pass from this point onwards and learns to use his body better in tight areas he will be some player. If he was 25 with 5/6 years under his belt I’d get where your coming from but he’s a kid we picked up in France having played a few months of football in the top tier prior to getting a run of games for us in the later stages of the season mainly due to the fact the squad if full of injuries.
I keep thinking that Baleba is first edition Bissouma. Raw, physically imposing, clearly very talented, but yet to learn the more mature elements of being a top midfielder. As you say, it's using his body better and making the right decisions more regularly. Let's not forget, he's only just turned 20. When Caicedo was 20 he was just about to go on a fairly bleak loan spell to the bottom of the Belgian League, and at that age Bissouma was only just breaking through at Lille.

We have to be careful. We over-hype our youngsters because we've had some stellar ones, but everyone has a different development speed.

Looking at the squad, I expect/hope for the following:

Out: Fati, Milner, Webster, Dahoud, Alzate, Sima, Veltman (sadly)
In: Specialist right back, Specialist midfield (Dewsbury-Hall/Locatelli), Rushworth promoted to compete for no.1 with Bart, perhaps Kozlowski coming in to compete in midfield, Osman to compete with Mitoma who I think will stay

I suspect we will actually sign 2x £30m+ players this summer and sell relatively few

What I think will happen.

Leaving

  • Moder will move on, maybe on loan
  • Gross will decide to end his career in Germany
  • Veltman will also decide to try one new club before the end, maybe back in Holland
  • Lallana will retire, or be retired
  • I don't think we will sell anyone for big money this summer
  • Everyone, apart from Rushworth, currently loaned will be sold or reloaned. Nobody else will be named in the squad

Staying

  • Milner. Will be offered another year. Not sure whether he'll accept it or not
  • Lamptey will be offered and sign a new deal
  • Webster will stay on as 4th choice CB
  • Steele will stay on as number 2 and may drop down to 3
  • Welbeck. One last year and will go into media after that

Bought In for the first team

  • Right back
  • 2 x Centre Mid
  • 2 x Winger
  • 1 Striker
Plus there will be the normal assortment of buy to loans and u23 players bought in

I'm not saying rotate, but we do need a stronger GK back for genuine competition longer term
I really don't think we do. Whilst I don't think that Steele should be our number 1, he's perfect for a back-up in that he'll happily train and sit on the bench and do a job on the very rare occasions that the number 1 is injured or suspended.

Rushworth is a 22 year old in development with a potentially big future. A season sitting on our bench for all but a handful of cup games is a waste of a season for him when he could be loaned out to a Championship club and play 46 games worth of experience.

Imho we need to get rid of Lamptey.
He's at the age where he has to be registered as a squad member. We know he can't play RB. So he's effectively a versatile but injury prone luxury.
Love the kid but sometimes you have to move on.
