I had quite high expectations as I love the games, the setting in the postapocalyptic world and the franchise design/visuals in general. I had to adjust those expectations slightly downwards watching the first too episodes as I though it was a bit too "hollywoody" and naively silly. It also didn't help that I had previously watched "SILO" (which is amazing btw) taking in place in a postapocalyptic vault as well. Silo was more dark and serious which I quite liked.

They have managed to capture some of the feel and some of the black humour of the games and the storyline is quite good, even if it is predictable in most cases.

I also love the ideas and technologies the games/TV series play with. Some physicist could probably answer this: Why can't we have miniature nuclear engines to power cars or small towns for example?

Having now watched the whole first season, I would say 7/10. Enjoyable and will most likely watch the following seasons, but it's nothing amazing. The games are way more captivating.

One episode left to watch tonight.

Big fan of Fallout 3 & New Vegas, have played through them both multiple times.

I’m not super enjoying the show.
- I think the effects, world building and music is all fantastic. But the narrative, acting and pacing is dull and slow.

Interestingly, my wife who’d never heard of the fallout games, enjoys it far more that I do.

For me, it’s not a bad show at all, just thoroughly uninteresting after the first episode.

It looks fantastic and Ella Purnell is both great and almost Impossibly beautiful but I haven't really been able to get in to it.
I didn't like Dune either. I think maybe I'm not into these kind of things.

Really enjoyed the series but (unless I missed something) was it ever explained how:

Moldaver was still alive 200 years post-apocalypse? Was she cryogenically frozen in a vault? Seems unlikely given her conflicts with Vault-Tec?

Never played the games, but watched the first episode and really liked it. Can I just dive into Fallout 4 without any knowledge or experience of the prior games? I'm familiar with open worlds and crafting all that shit. I'm 50 next year.
Should be fine. My first Fallout was Fallout 3, having never played any of the others. Game didn't assume prior knowledge too much. I believe each game (and now this series) effectively "resets" itself - each game is broadly the same (survivor emerges from Vault, heads into the unknown, etc etc), but each time this happens is years apart. I saw a timeline somewhere recently that helped a lot. But to cut it short: each game should stand alone very easily, with little or no reliance on having played previous games as there's not much (if any) crossover of storylines.

Edit: as far as the series goes, I gobbled it up this week. Thought it captured the right feel of the games. Storyline could have been a bit more compelling and more tightly written. And (trying to avoid being spoilery here) I thought some of the character traits were a bit contrived / hard to believe. But all up a very good execution of game-to-TV adaptation, I'll be looking out for season 2.

She was cryogenically frozen, yes, and I have also wondered about this. It’s great that a show has made me care enough to think about the lore - haven’t had that since The X-Files! Sadly, I suspect we’ll never know the answer outside of a “word of god” explanation via Twitter or something. The NCR appear to have been completely buried with the bombing of Shady Sands, killing off that plot line. I don’t think we’ll get an answer in show for this one, sadly.

Absolutely! Each game takes part in a different part of the country, minimum of decades apart, with its own vault dweller/protagonist (the game’s version of Lucy) which you customise. Whilst it’s nice to know the lore and universe, given that every game is canonical in the fictional world, it is absolutely not necessary. They’re designed to stand alone - as with the show - but fans can enjoy little Easter eggs and in-jokes without anyone being left behind.

Most people started the series with Fallout 3 or New Vegas, when the game went into a 3D open world, rather than the turn based 2D overhead view of the first two games. Similar to Grand Theft Auto - it exploded when it went open world first person.

You don’t need to know anything. Just go and explore and have an absolute blast.

Next week a 60fps version launches for PS5, or if you’re on PC the same version is already available. Perfect time to start playing!

We do have nuclear powered submarines - the advantage for these vehicles is they can be cooled by the sea in the event of an emergency.

The same tech could probably power ships, however it’s incredibly expensive and I doubt international ports would be too keen on various nuclear reactors pulling into dock from various countries.

For smaller vehicles the problem with fission isn’t the reactions, it’s keeping the reactions under control. Cars can crash - that’s probably not great if you have a nuclear fission reactor under the bonnet.

For small towns, again cost and perception of health risk and dealing with waste. It’s going to take 100 years to decommission Sellafield, the waste from that will take a 1000 years before it no longer poses a health risk.

Finished watching this a few days ago, me and the Mrs absolutely loved it, so many Easter eggs while still telling a new story. It felt very authentic, clearly a lot of thought has gone into it and I can't wait for season two already.

I've got Fallout 4 downloaded on my PS5 eagerly awaiting the new update, then off to explore the wastelands once again.
Incidentally, Fallout 4 has become one of the best selling games in Europe since the series dropped. Not bad for an almost 10 year old game.

For cars etc they can't be made small or safe or cheap enough (yet). Fission (what we have today) comes with far too many safety issues for non-military transport. Fusion (what Fallout plays around with) isn't yet viable even at large scale.

So never having played the game but based on the recommendations on here, I watched episode one last night.

I loved the music (felt very arty and Kill Bill like)
I loved the Lucy storyline
I quite liked Maximus segment
I was a bit confused by The Ghoul section at the end

Overall I give it 7.5/10 so far and will watch Ep 2

Can I ask some questions so I know whats what before watching episode 2

Are there more characters to introduce in the same fashion or are these the main 3 ?
Does it get better from here or tread water ?
and I presume these characters all come together/connect at some point ?

TIA

A little way off getting the 1.21 giga watts for time travel.

These are the main three storylines, but they cross over very quickly and throughout the series. In my opinion it just gets better and better, but everyone will have their own opinion. Critically on Rotten Tomatoes and with user ratings on IMDB though it is one of the most successful new series of the last decade.

The big American aircraft carriers are nuclear powered as well. The Queen Elizabeth carriers aren't, basically because it would have cost hugely more while not providing any particular benefit to justify it.

Back in the 50s when everybody thought everything was going to be nuclear powered, some thought was given to nuclear powered planes, but there are fairly obvious issues with flying around with a nuclear reactor and several tonnes of lead insulation.

I am enjoying it, it kinda feels like a very long cut scene, I love the way they have been very true to the ethos of the game and how it is played but have to wonder if anyone who has not played the game can make sense of it?

The kids and I had never played the games, but we enjoyed it.

It's a bit silly at times, for example (* minor spoiler) with Coop having no issues with T60s in the last episode, but not being able to shoot one in the first/second episode.

Because we haven't mastered cold fusion. It's probably impossible.
