[Albion] Who should be "credited" with our goal against Burnley?

As far as I can tell, every single website has "credited" our goal today as an own goal by 'keeper Arijanet Muric. However, shouldn't it be credited as an own goal by Sander Berge? I realise Muric is clearly the player at fault as he lets the ball trickle under his foot, but the pass from Berge was heading goalwards and Muric's very slight deflection makes no material difference. If Muric had missed the ball completely, it would definitely have been an own goal by Berge (as you obviously can't credit a goal to someone who hasn't touched the ball). Therefore, it has to go down as a Berge own goal, surely?

When goals are scored by an attacking player, it is generally accepted that if a shot is on target then a slight deflection off a defender doesn't cause it to be awarded as an own goal but is still credited to the attacking player. Therefore Muric's slight touch should be meaningless in this instance.

I record details of all Albion matches so this isn't just an academic discussion. Does anyone else think it is an own goal by Berge?

I thought the same - that it’s Berge’s og. Although I can’t find anything on line to definitively clarify on the attribution of ogs in these circumstances . Surely it comes down to something more solid than who was at fault - for one thing , that would be a matter of opinion

This is the case for regular goals, but doesn’t seem to be the case for own goals. And there seems to be different rules for regular goals and who deflects the ball i.e. team mate or opponent.

I note that own goals do not count in bets so I presume this is why there are no clear rules.

That's [Muric error] our doing as coaches. This is what we expect, this is how we play. We expect the goalkeeper and demand that the goalkeeper is able to play with his feet.

Both the Premier League and Opta websites have it down as Muric. Guess it must be “last player to touch the ball” 🤷‍♂️

Exactly. It’s definitely Berge’s goal.

He kicked the ball at the goal. The keeper got a feather, but failed to stop it. Those are the FACTS.

Take a similar scenario, but in this one Berge kicks it much harder, towards the corner of the goal. Muric at full stretch gets a toe to it but can’t keep it out. In that scenario nobody would be suggesting it was the keeper’s OG - and yet the situations are effectively the very same.

The only differences are subjective opinions of merit / blame - and that not how statistics work.

It's an assistant from the defender who passed the ball to the keeper, who with amazing skill took a first time shot and scored.

He kicked the ball to the keeper, not the goal…….the goal just happened to be there…..
