[Football] ISIS Threats - Do they Realise that with all the Security Forces adding EXTRA security a successful attack is highly unlikely -

Threats made to stadiums hosting Champions League matches but do ISIS or any other terrorist group realise just how much security already surrounds top flight football stadia in Europe and the UK? Add that to the additional security by security forces, and ISIS (or any other terror group) has a hope in ell of carrying out a major terror attack at a football match imo. EDIT - ie with the extra security put in place in response to intelligence of possible threats.

Maybe they do realise but they just want to try and cause disruption and widespread upset by forcing cancelations (or evacuations) - glad UEFA and the security forces are not giving in to such terror tactics:

As you rightly suggest, they can cause all manner of disruption, and cost, just by suggesting a threat - even if they've no plans or intentions to act it out.

But - I think your tone is way too blasé aver the threat to football, in general. Security at Premier League grounds is pretty slack, in comparison to other major events.

Also ISIS have guns and bombs, football matches are secured against knives and bottle tops.

My tone was specifically in relation to the threats made to these Champions League matches with existing security PLUS extra security that is put in place (and is always put in place when the intelligence services receive specific threats.).

Of course - Any crowded place, concerts, railway stations, big sports events, etc are vulnerable and have been for years which is why our security risk in the UK remains at ’substantial’. However, very few, if any major terror attack ie bombs (as opposed to knife/machete lone rangers) happen now (since a massive overhaul of security measures globally since 9/11) without some intelligence that attacks are imminent- in which case the security around the venue/location is heightened accordingly.

It’s disingenuous to say I am ‘blase’ about risks to football stadia in general when I was specifically referring to the overall security that is in place for the Champions league matches this week ie the existing security/camera/ticket security/searches, in addition to the extra security on top of that as a result of security threats.. Other Premier League Stadia would also get that extra security should a major terrorist threat be received.

I don’t take terror threats lightly but there is no way these matches would be allowed to go ahead if the risk hadn’t been mitigated or neutralised. I also think you shouldn’t give in to scaremongering or playing up the risk, that is also what terrorists want - you are more likely to get knocked down by a car or injured/killed in a car accident that be a victim of a major terror attack so let’s keep it real.

Not even that. Why try to get a device into a stadium? The highest risk areas are the immediate vicinity outside stadia or on major transit / transport systems serving the stadia.

ISIS attack on the Amex. 7 large explosions were reported in the East Stand lower after the 85th minute of the home match against Man City. Thankfully nobody was injured and the police are scouring for witnesses to the incident.

If 'additional security' simply means hiring even more uninterested minimum-wage agency workers in hi-viz who spend their entire shift looking at their phones, then nothing to worry about.

Depends what you mean by ‘disruption’ - I don’t think laying on extra security counts as a win personally- it is the extra security that makes us less vulnerable if the security forces receive intelligence of a major terrorist attack - would you rather they didn’t lay on extra security?.

That’s one of the reasons (actually the main reason I think, extra security has been laid on)

I agree that cancelling an event would be disruptive- which is why I said in my OP that I was glad that UEFA and the security services have not allowed the matches to be suspended or stopped - that would have been giving in to ‘terror’.

A thread on a news story reporting extra security in place because of intelligence of terror threats wasn’t intented to initiate a scaremongering, hyperbolic reaction. The Security Forces and UEFA have got this so calm down every one!

I think the decision to not cancel has more to do with lost revenue/ sponsorship than the welfare of people.
If anything does happen on a large scale as suggested all matches targeted, there will be one hell of a backlash.

Rubbish.

The security services do not make money out of football and it is the security services that determine what the risk is to go ahead or not. UEFA would not have any choice in the matter.

Same for any local incidents at Brighton - if for any reason the police decided certain extraordinary measures needed to be put in place to protect the public, the Club would have no choice but to comply.
