Doesn’t have to be a goal scoring opportunity. Doesn’t have to be on purpose.

But Lamptey does make a genuine attempt to play the ball. Does make contact but not cleanly.

The attacker goes into Lamptey who hasn’t moved to obstruct, he’s still in a falling motion. The ball’s direction deviates from Lamptey’s touch and the attacker has made a movement away from the ball. It’s a close one.
The law used to be that it had to be intentional for a penalty to be awarded
If the ref deemed it not intentional it wasn’t awarded
That’s how it was when I qualified as a ref in the early 80s I’m not sure if the law now but someone on here will probably tell us
That also applied to handball aswell

He got to the ball first, diverted it away from the intended path of the attacker and then collided with him.

You could excuse the ref missing out in real time, but this is EXACTLY what VAR was brought in for.

I don't want to believe it, but the more of these I see, the more I get drawn towards the big club bias club.

What about the others we conceded and didn’t score?

Is this going to be it till the end of the season?

Kvetching about all the other reasons for not winning while the team does feck all to generate a win.
I’m not doing that though.

Arsenal were clearly considerably better and deserved the three points.

Not that it would have made much difference, but definitely not a pen. Got a touch of the ball and as we have been told consistently by the refs this season that means no pen.
even when by accident, grazing the ball as they went the wrong way, and took out the player in the process? i can see what you mean if the defender has "won" the ball.

This one is quite easy.

Lampty tripped him in the penalty box therefore it’s a penalty.

“A penalty kick is awarded if a player commits a direct free kick offence inside their penalty area”

1. Direct free kick

A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
  • charges
  • jumps at
  • kicks or attempts to kick
  • pushes
  • strikes or attempts to strike (including head-butt)
  • tackles or challenges
  • trips or attempts to trip”

Yeah I know but it's still going to feed a kvetchathon.

Before pro Arsenal viewpoints pile in, please remember the benchmark from some experts that Doku got some the ball before his studs struck MacA …. their conclusion that getting to the ball first meant it was not a foul.
I think the difference would be Doku and Mac could be classed as a collision

Yep. As per when we were all told by Howard Webb that this wasn't a penalty because he touched the ball first.
To be honest it was a clumsy challenge by Lamptey and I can see why it was given but they change the rules according to which team is appealing.

Is this a direct quote from Howard Webb? As the head of the PGMOL, or whatever they’re called, he would know that touching the ball has nothing to do with the decision. If it is a direct quote no wonder refereeing is such a mess.

We don’t get that if it’s the other way round
