I would prefer it if he said nothing but he can't really win. The press keep asking him the same questions and keep talking about him for the Liverpool/Bayern/Barca/whoever job.

If he says absolutely nothing people will complain.

If he says something people will complain.

If he goes full Poyet and touts himself for every available 'bigger' job people will complain.

What he's said consistently is that his ambitions and the club's ambitions need to align. He hasn't said anything about any of the jobs the press keep pushing on him. In the guardian article where the headline makes it looks like he's got crisis meetings lined up what he actually says is:

To work next season at Brighton, I don’t need to extend. At the moment, we finished the discussion about contracts but not because I have decided yet to leave.

My focus is on Brighton this season and the next season but before we start the next season I would like to speak and listen to the plan for the team – it is a serious thing. I want to know the target and what we are playing for. I have already spoken to Tony [Bloom, the owner] and in the future we will talk again about the plan for next season and then we will find a solution but both the club and myself need to be happy.”

That's it. In terms of his future that's pretty much all he's been saying for months.

In my opinion the only thing extra he could say is....now stop asking me the same shit questions!

All of this. The assembled hacks have no interest (ie can’t generate any headlines) by asking him about tactics etc, but if they get a rise out of him about another job or a tenuous, misinterpreted/badly translated half-hint that he’s possibly fallen out with Tony then they’ve got what they wanted, particularly when they twist it a bit more and use the words out of context to make up a clickbaity headline.

Suspect the reality is quite boring in that he’s in discussion on a regular basis about all sorts of stuff and it’ll be worked out in due course

I really wish he would. Klopp shut down all questions on his future…I wish RDZ would as well.

Really? Aside from a joke he made when quizzed about being interested in an opponent’s player, I have not seen any quotes since that interview he did. That said I don’t go looking for his comments. By contrast RDZ replies about his future were in the press before and after yesterday's game.

Regardless of this it is easy to play a straight bat at the very least.

I was thinking more of the emotional video he released, the day of interviews and the ongoing song and dance it has created. He might not be talking about it but it is the topic surrounding Liverpool. It is the narrative he has created.

How does De Zerbi straight bat it?

If he says he doesn't want to talk about it people will complain that he's not sufficiently being pro Albion.

If he does the managerial equivalent of kissing the badge he's only inviting huge fury when he inevitably moves on, whether that is this summer, next or some unspecified time in the future.

I really think the only way he can stop it is if he tells them all to shut up asking bollocks questions but that feels like a surefire way to turn the press against you.

I think the way Klopp and Liverpool have handled the situation is pretty good. Let’s face it, there was always going to be discussion but the key for them is to minimize this…which they have done; there is a narrative but they own it. That 30 min video pre-empted most questions, minimized chatter and crucially, to my knowledge, no one from the club has fueled the discussion ever since.

How does RDZ straight bat it? Unfortunately he has made his bed somewhat, with all the stuff he has come out with since January; RDZ likes to talk about this topic and the press now know this. That said,, all he has to say is that he’s here to talk about the game. Say that enough times and the press will most likely stop asking. And even if they don’t they won’t have any nuggets to chew over.

The ambition bit is just bollocks if we hold onto most of our players and add some more quality in the summer we could have a tilt at the top 6. This is nothing more than the manager flashing his knickers at the clubs he is being linked with and can’t see Bloom or Barber being impressed no matter what they say to press about it. It’s not hard to say ‘I am flattered by the links but at the moment my focus is on finishing the season strongly with Brighton then I will sit down with the chairman to see how we both feel about next season’. Sadly I think RDZ has been doping on his own hype and needs to show a bit more respect to the club that have elevated his profile (see Alonso for the promising manager linked with top jobs textbook).

Easy to close down, all RDZ has to say is that he has spoken to Tony and that unless bids of £100m+ no players will be leaving in the summer without RDZ approval, and with the club well set under FPP first team ready signings will be made in the summer, and that RDZ is looking forward to the challenge of creating more history with Brighton.

May not be true but shuts the other club discussion down, and also excites fans about next season.

See this post and his post match interview yesterday. https://www.northstandchat.com/threads/rdz-pre-liverpool-press-conference.407222/post-11078466 he pretty much says all of that (other than saying he's flattered about links to another club).

He says his focus is on this season, and next season with us. At the end of the season, he wants to talk to Bloom and discuss the plan for the club. There is zero evidence in that interview that he's flashing his knickers at other clubs (unless saying what a good player Alexis Mac Allister is, is somehow a come and get me plea to Liverpool).

Yeah, it's been great from their end, they're in control of the narrative but it's unleashed endless speculation that has caused disruption and non stop stories around other clubs and other managers. He knew what he was doing, he could have informed his board he was leaving and then got on with his job before announcing at the end of the season he was going.

The reason was the club of their stature would not be able to keep it quiet given the amount of regular, and additional, preparation needed for next season. Someone would twig at somepoint They decided to make the announcement at what they felt was the optimal time and control the narrative the best they could.

I appreciate, to a degree, RDZ cannot win but there are better ways to handle/contain this and I just don’t think he has done this well and it’s been going on for a while now. Others say they find his openness refreshing, on this specific topic I now find it a bit annoying. Please note It’s a minor gripe.

Minor, and I’d cut him extra slack as he’s having to answer in a language he isn’t overly comfortable with yet either. If Tony/Paul were remotely bothered about what he‘s been ‘repeatedly’ saying they would have stopped it

Yes and last week and the week before and after January perhaps a bit less talking about it and focusing on the task in hand might be in order. Also may just be me but don’t like managers talking about Tony needing to convince him of ambition given where he has taken this club. Just think he needs to reign it in publicly

So the chaos and disruption has been passed on to other clubs.

In terms of it being a minor gripe, I think that's actually most of my main point. It is minor but is being blown out of all proportion.
