[Albion] Have we ever had a truly crushing last gasp defeat?

Was watching the end of Watford v Leicester play off match and got me thinking if we had ever suffered a truly crushing, soul destroying last minute turnaround? So I'm thinking like the one we inflicted on Swindon, or Man U on Bayern, Spurs on Ajax, the Man C goal that stopped United winning the league or our last minute equaliser against Millwall. So a very late 'winner takes all' game changing goal in a major match. Can't think of one - obviously we had awful soul destroying defeats against Palace, Middlesbrough and Man U but they weren't sink to your knees last minute crushers. I'm sure I'm overlooking something - maybe the Villa goal that meant we didn't win the league and had Hereford scored in the last minute that would have been top of the list. Any others?

First game of the season away at Leeds about 15 years ago. I remember that hurting.

That Villa goal is up there for me if only for the miserable journey back having come so close to winning it.

But honestly we had three chances to secure that title and fluffed all of them so even the disappointment of that goal is tempered somewhat.

Closest I can think of is the 2-2 draw against Burnley towards the end of the 15-16 season. Michael Keane scored an injury time equaliser and it felt like a defeat. The win would have left us 1 point behind Burnley and given us a real boost to our run in. Remember coming away from the Amex that day feeling really flat.

Yeah, but I'm thinking season defining moments. I can't remember feeling how Swindon or Bayern fans must have done in those games.

You are right, I can’t really think of any. We’ve had a lot more of those goals going in positively for us - Wilkins, Virgo, Ulloa, Mac Allister.

I'm still hurting from that....I vividly remember the journey back to Somerset (including the M27 being closed, and having to divert through endless housing estates around Fareham).

God, yes, I remember one of the chances where Murray and Baldock were on the edge of the box, the defence no where and just the keeper to beat.
And somehow they cocked it up.
Plus at the end Stockdaye waving goodbye.
That game was a real begger - but we did have the promotion already.

That 95th minute Benteke goal in 2021 was unbelievably painful. 75% possession, 25 shots to their 3…I had resigned myself to accepting a draw. And then it got worse - much, much worse. The worst feeling I’ve had caused by sport for as longs as I can remember.

Apart from the Villa game, the 1-0 loss to Bristol City at the Amex during the 'players on the piss' run-in was particularly galling. Seeing the Chapionship Winners podium sections being laid at the side of the pitch by the NE corner in preparation - then seeing them be packed away again. Sake! :facepalm:

It may sound weird, but I hope so. Imagine losing out and finishing second in the EPL due to a last minute goal.

We haven't had much in the way of crushing disappointment because we haven't been close enough to anything that matters to feel it.

And Smith Must Score is probably the closest.

The only saving grace is that nobody was in the ground to see it. But bloody hell that was a particularly low moment in the pandemic.

Feel like we've had quite a few over the years, albeit none especially season defining. Spurs this season is an irritating one. And the game we defended for 88 mins and then buckled to a long ranger from Eriksen.

Same season as the 2-3 vs Utd where they were awarded a penalty after the FT whistle had gone. On the whole I don’t have good memories of watching the vast majority of those lockdown home games in 20/21. Felt like we were cursed.
