Just reading about AWC paying drivers a £600 bonus up from £125 for overtime/rest day working this is on top of that days pay rate, wish my employer was as generous.

They don’t have enough drivers. They can’t afford to lose the ones they have.
The problem they have is they desperately need the drivers to work rest days / overtime / Sundays to provide the service, as they don’t have enough drivers on the books.
They’re not alone in this regard among train operators either. It’s why overtime bans cause such chaos.

Limiting applicants to two applications in their lifetime doesn’t seem designed to get more qualified drivers.
The politics of envy? Do you complain when corporate bosses get £ millions in bonuses and additional shares, or is it only when the 'proles' get decent pay or a bonus that you start off a thread to moan.
Why not switch careers and work for AWC?
Maybe get Mick Lynch to represent you?

We have a situation where none of the train companies want to train new drivers, as it is too expensive and they are all worried their qualified drivers can be poached.
Why not take this out of the hands of the train companies? Make this a university degree course like everything else backed by the student loan scheme? If driver training can also include elements of railway management, who knows we may even end up with managers of the railways who have a clue how things actually work, based on experience.

I suppose you could say they’re on the right track.
Interesting times lie ahead comrade, when Mick Lynch and Mick Whelan run the country. I suppose someone's got to, but these two odious, selfish, greedy bastards? I can't say that I find the prospect exciting. The next photo I see of these power crazy champagne socialists, I'd like it to be of them underneath one of their trains. Meanwhile, if you need to use their service to get to a hospital chemotherapy appointment, a flight at an airport, an entertainment venue, or just to visit relatives, you're ****ed.
I wish I'd asked Leach's consent when I spent £300 on tickets to see Loreena McKennitt at The Palladium, and a hotel locally. It's all non refundable. Unfortunately, my girlfriend and I can't taxi it , and charge the bill to ASLEF, like these two pieces of *** do.

Which university is going to install a railway??!!
I’d prefer the gov made it a condition of having the TOC license to train x% of new drivers per year, or better still nationalise the whole bloody thing.

The 18 months driver training is mostly supervised driving from what a pal (who is a driver instructor) told me

A lot of people are just going to blame Lynch and Whelan for this because yes, it probably is down to them negotiating, but this is actually just complete lunacy from Avanti. Instead of paying this amount for Overtime it would just be cheaper, to give them their pay rise. Avanti need to be taken into DfT control sooner rather than later because they people running it are on a ideological nosedive to prove something, but nobody is not really sure what they are proving other than making a wholly unworkable service for everyone.

Cheaper in the short term but once a pay rise is given it's permanent, which is why from a management view this might be more financially attractive IF they have a plan to have the required level of new drivers trained in 12 months time. Someone mentioned banking bonuses earlier in the thread, Avanti are essentially doing just that.
If I were a train driver and these ridiculous overtime rates were being introduced then I'd be wanting my union to actually block training lots of new drivers......
There will likely be some trains running or you could book tickets on National Express.
