And another opinion

I live in South Texas. I have watched our border for years. The one thing that really pisses me off is when some MAGA cult member who has been drinking from the right-wing propaganda hose for years tries to tell me what I have experienced, what I have lived. Here’s the reality… Under Obama/Biden the border was its most peaceful in 20+ years. When Trump took office everything blew up, caravans, disgusting detention centers in shopping centers, horrific child separations. A paper quagmire that the Biden administration is still sorting out. Nobody working for Trump was serious or had a plan. They just escalated cruelty and didn’t do any of the paperwork. Like everything Trump did it was inept, incompetent, more harm than good. Trump’s entire administration was a series of incompetent missteps. Covid, body bags, billions in misplaced or stolen stimulus, 8 Trillion added to the deficit, stock market crash, rising inflation, security breaches, loss of classified documents, fake electors scheme, the ridiculous, violent, seditious insurrection at the capitol. All of the above while his corpulent ass golfed over 365 days out of four years. Don’t come on my timeline trying to impose your artificial reality that Obama (Black man bad!!!) caused the border crisis and the fantasy that the border was secure under Trump. There’s a difference between what Trump says and what he does. He has always been all talk and no action. Right wingers today are manipulating the gullible, using footage that was taken months ago and screaming “invasion!”. It’s important to remember that Republicans want it to be crazy, they need it to be crazy. That’s why they blocked the most significant border reform legislation in decades. They can’t complain about Joe Biden if we fix the problem. I for one am tired of our border culture being used as a political piñata by hacks that don’t understand it. The border can not be closed. If it is closed it has a negative impact on US GDP of $2 Billion a day. Families live on both sides of the border. People cross the border everyday, each way, to go to work, school, volunteer. Right wing ignorance supposes that the Mexico side of the border is a no-man’s land. It’s not, our border cities are half in the US and half in Mexico, divided only by a checkpoint. They are communities. Unfamiliar to some, but a way of life for us. Non-nuanced black and white thinking is why Republicans keep losing elections. Ignorance about the border, ignorance about women’s health, ignorance about the fascist threat that they are so hellbent on putting back in the White House so he can do more damage to our economy, security and standing in the world. Do me a favor. Understand that reality is nothing like the Russia-fueled disinformation that is constantly spewed by Fox, Newsmax, OAN and all of the fear monger podcasts. It’s all nonsense. Life here isn’t perfect but it isn’t a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie either. Life in South Texas is peaceful and pleasant and nothing like the hellhole depicted on Right-Wing Propaganda outlets. Neither is the rest of America. Don’t be like this guy below, a “Christian” that has the nerve to call me a liar, when his entire worldview is built on a steady diet of lies and fear from the media puppet masters that control him. If you want to comment on the border, come see it with your own eyes. When the drunken MAGA “take back our border” people came down here they couldn’t find any migrants to threaten. So after making a mess in our yards and our streets, they left. And we cleaned up after them. Migrants aren’t as messy. If you want to make a difference, call your Congressperson and tell them to support the bipartisan border security legislation. Get these National Guard members back to duty and out of our streets, hotels and coffee shops… end the congestion caused by Greg Abbott’s desperate audition for VP. Quit spreading the Republican lie that the border is in crisis.
And here endeth the one and only lesson worth listening to imo - a very sensible ’letter from America’ that articulates the vacuous nature of current Republican thinking perfectly. Restores my hope in the ability of America to make the right choice in November.

Great post and brilliant narrative of the definition of populism described by Alastair Campbell recently.

1. Populism seeks to exploit problems rather than solving them.

2. Populism seeks to divide the population rather than unite it.

Both, of course, are highly effective distraction techniques for those who only seek money, power and influence through politics rather than a greater good for their electorate and Country.

Mr Trump and Mr Johnson personify this particular definition. And when they are called out, we’re reminded that politicians are all the same so you may as well vote for one with a bit of personality.

Serious question. Is this a cut and paste job or do you really live in Texas?

Your location says Brighton?

@One Love - I hope you don’t mind but I am copying your narrative into an email to my Aunty in Michigan who is working hard on the ground to counter a growing sense of apathy amongst the electorate in that State, especially among young voters - I think it will be inspiring.
I think the apathy among young voters in MI is more to do with the fact that they can’t afford to put gas in their cars, pay their rent or put food on their tables.

Actually, the ‘apathy’ I had in mind was because young voters feel disenfranchised by a couple of old codgers going at it head to head again in a repeat of an election battle most want to forget - also, (I think we talked about this before?) the Democratic ‘non-committals’ who are unhappy with Biden’s response to Gaza.

Based on previous posts, @One Love was born in Brighton but that doesn’t mean Texas is not the current residence.

I suspect anyway, it is a cut and paste because no one writes such good prose off the top of their head like that but mainly because of it’s plea to support the Bipartisan Immigration Bill which actually died on the floor of the Senate on February 7 after it was opposed by all but 4 Reps and a few Dems. It was written some time ago therefore imo, maybe even posted in a local paper or on a leaflet.

That doesn’t take away from the clarity and perceptiveness of the writer, nor renders any of it less ‘real’ or less powerful.
…but is still certainly a misrepresentation by him. Politicians (both parties) have been throwing money at different causes for decades now, to no effect, other than a 36 trillion national debt. Just enforce the current immigration laws and do it legally. That’s what I had to do.

I guess Gaza is for the other thread. But why is it that “the left” compare Trump to Hitler while at the same time espousing support for Hamas whose sole purpose is to eradicate Israel?

The left don’t support Hamas, the only people that support Hamas are other terrorists or at least those that condone violence extremism..

I’m the wrong person to ask about comparing Trump to Hitler (which is ridiculous anyway) . Being Jewish, the only person I will ever ever compare to Hitler is Hitler.

I have found our ‘I live in Texas’ narrative BTW posted by @One Love

Yeah - rethinking the sources of that 😂

This was interesting on my search- a non-profit, media messaging organisation (political) called ‘Progress Texas’ - maybe the authorship of said narrative? I still say it’s a great piece of prose though but the more I read it, the more it sounds very well ‘crafted’ and put together.

I agree (and acknowledged) it was very well put together. I just don’t agree with the content.

Of course you don’t - it’s a Democratic POV - with a touch of embellishment perhaps! 🙂

A really good opinion pice by Victor Davis Hanson.

So you've posted a link to a republican supporting site, and claim it's a really good opinion piece by the man who wrote 'The Case for Trump'?

You might as well get a really good opinion from Trump himself.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders responded to the Axios report with a statement defending the president's work ethic:

"The time in the morning is a mix of residence time and Oval Office time, but he always has calls with staff, Hill members, cabinet members and foreign leaders during this time. The President is one of the hardest workers I've ever seen and puts in long hours and long days nearly every day of the week all year long. It has been noted by reporters many times that they wish he would slow down because they sometimes have trouble keeping up with him."

Here you go, quoted from the BBC article so it may even be true. Sarah Sanders is a far more reliable source than left wing Axios, the source BBC used for its hit piece.

Sarah Sanders is a Republican! She's hardly going to slag him off is she.

And why was she having to defend his work ethic in the first place? Obviously because people had noticed he wasn't working much.
