I'm 100% republican (with respect to the royals, absolutely not with respect to US politics!), but as somebody who's wife is also going through cancer treatment I can absolutely relate. It's a horrible thing to deal with.
Yes, the American colonists were not too keen on the royal family back in the day.
Just joking, I wish a speedy recovery to them and anybody else going through this ordeal.

The media - including mainstream media like Sky and BBC News - gave huge amounts of oxygen to the nutters and conspiracy theorists over that photo. Anyone that got on that bandwagon should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. The media should also look at how they cover 'stories' like this. I say should, but sadly they won't.

My thoughts and best wishes go to the Princess of Wales and all her family and I hope Catherine makes a full recovery.

I am glad that the truth is now out there.

Sadly, I think that this Kate situation has shown that the relationship between the people, the media and the Royal Family is beyond repair. It is impossible for them to have any sense of normal family life under the global media glare.

I truly believe that most of them are decent, but surely the game is up now. If you take money from the taxpayer you have to have a degree of transparency and accountability, it is a contract between the monarchy and the people, but newspapers with dwindling circulations and a plethora of media channels need a daily diet of stories. This cannot work in the modern age and is inevitably going to end up with a tragic suicide or Diana Part 2. Enough now.

Bit odd or a bit dark to think that suicide or accidental death are the only options.

Is this necessary now?

The person who posted credible details of the news to social media first appears to be a Brighton supporter.

Well that was pretty unwelcoming of them. Why the f**k can’t people mind their own business and let people make their own decisions on what and when they want the world to know.

I disagree with you most profoundly.

The relationship between the royals the people and the media is the same as it ever was. Except that since the Lady Diana era the media has become much more intrusive. Social media is another beast. And remember your laptop and phone are only 3 clicks away from illegal porn. So, perspective and judgement are needed.

None of them ever had normal family life. Let alone under the media glare.

The game is not up. The taxpayer does not own what they represent, and certainly does not own not the humans that populate the firm.

Transparency and accountability does not extend to having to tell the country you have cancer. That is not part of any contract.

Media intrusion is more illegal now that it ever was. Internet speculation is however for anyone to sell.

Things change, but in many repects they stay the same.

Today's press release was an elegant 'f*** you, and f*** off' from someone I had never heard speak before and who has been absurdly roughed up over perfectly reasonable photoshopping.

Anyway, I'm off to pick up my new pet that I bought on a Russian version of Ebay this afternoon. Can't wait to take him out for a flight.

Soooo excited

What a f***ed up, look at me world social media is.

I hope she gets well soon and I hope the press and twitter leaker wankers go f*** themselves. At the end of the day this is a young woman with a young family who has had a terrifying diagnosis. Leave her the f*** alone

I genuinely sympathise with her and The Royal Family, and on a human level I hope she makes a swift and full recovery, but continuing on a human equitable level who else gets immediate treatment, pre-emptive chemo, then 4 weeks off witht he whole family to heal with absolutely no worries about money or running a household?

The world HAS changed. Harry has "quit" The Firm, Andrew has been cancelled, the Queen is dead, the Royal Family is looking frail, struggling under the media glare. Yet whilst there is The Civil List and we live in a constitutional monarchy there will be a degree of accountability and expectation from the people, and the media will feed and amplify that because they have a product to sell.

Expecting the media to back off or people to stop speculating is just unrealistic. I would be happy never to hear or read another word about Harry and Meghan but never a week goes by without them being in the news. They court publicity and - unfortunately - this increases William and Kate's profile as the media seek reaction and counter- reaction.

Just read the statement from Harry and Meghan. Doesn't it just exude warmth?
Link please?

Goodness, don’t bother - it doesn’t even merit a link

“We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace”

😳😳

If you are going to go through the protocol of wishing Kate and William well at least get someone to draft something a bit more convincing and personal even Fishy Rishi came up with something that showed some compassion and depth:

“My thoughts are with the Princess of Wales, Prince of Wales, the Royal Family and in particular her three children at this difficult time...The Princess of Wales has the love and support of the whole country as she continues her recovery. She has shown tremendous bravery with her statement today. In recent weeks, she has been subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world... When it comes to matters of health, like everyone else, she must be afforded the privacy to focus on her treatment and be with her loving family. I know I speak for the whole country in wishing her a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back in action when she's ready."

It is probably unrealistic to stop gossips and twats causing emotional damage to others but thats true in any walk of life too. I think Megan and Harry‘s relationship with the media is self inflicted - they are a really objectionable couple imo. Princess Kate and Prince William will always get the lion share of media attention because they are heirs to the throne - that goes with the territory.

The media I think though will back off now speculating about what is wrong but they won’t stop pursuing constant updates - there are some things though that are so deeply personal that even Royals should have right to complete privacy - that includes the nature of their cancer diagnoses and what the prognosis is. Coming to terms with your mortality through a cancer diagnosis isn’t really something you can share until you have really assimilated it yourself and know what your prognosis is. It is a life-changing, life-threatening ( in many cases) event that can totally floor you - it takes time to articulate even to close members of the family what is happening let alone the media.🙁

I thought Kate’s press release was both touching and a little heartbreaking - she has always been my favourite Royal after QE2. I hope and pray she fully recovers.

It is good to hear, in this era of social media apparently entitling people to know everything about everybody instantly, that the BBC filmed that statement on Wednesday and it didn't leak.
Having watched it again she mentions that the chemo is precautionary so that sounds better than it did initially.
Yes that bit is very encouraging and is explained partly by this extract from a news article concerning The Princess

Prof Andrew Beggs, MRC senior clinical fellow at the University of Birmingham, said: “Preventive chemotherapy after surgery is given to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back in the future – a bit like mopping a floor with bleach when you’ve spilt something on it, chemotherapy kills any spilt cells.”
