Bindon was awarded the Queen's Award for Bravery, a police bravery medal, for diving off Putney Bridge into the River Thames to rescue a drowning man, in 1968, although some said he had pushed the man in and only rescued him when a policeman appeared.

The last two people held in the tower of London were the Kray twins, but not political in any way, loads of people didn't turn up for national service, it was obviously random that they chose them

I watched an interesting documentary about Bindon and his antics. Here are a few snippets :
He happened to be on the island of Mustique when HRH Princess Margaret was there. Apparently she wished to see his ‘advantage’ - his oversized todger, to be precise. Now whether his ‘advantage’ was put into practice has never been revealed. On returning back to Blighty he was walking in London and a Bentley (or similar) pulled up and he was invited in. On board were two senior members of ‘the establishment’ who, in very firm and polite tones, warned Bindon that no word was to be uttered regarding the matter with HRH - ever. Bindon took the warning very seriously indeed and heeded it.
As your go to gangster type Bindon was hired to portray - yes, gangsters - in a number of films Get Carter and Performance spring to mind. In order to make more money he would sabotage the takes to ensure more time was spent on set, therefore more dosh.
Bindon was also hired as ‘security’ for Led Zep when they were touring in the States. He managed to screw that up by upsetting his American counterparts and I believe he got binned - sorry about that!
There are loads of other stories out there about Bindon if you care to look. It all caught up with him in the end and after heavy drug abuse he died of AIDS in 1993.

From what I’ve read on the topic, Reggie Kray could have been a very successful and legitimate businessman and realised that the gangster thing was detrimental and a distraction.I have to disagree, one was a serious f***ing weirdo. The other always stuck with his brother (the aforementioned f***ing weirdo)
Ronnie on the other hand was a paranoid schizophrenic and psychopath who loved the glamour of being a notorious gangster and inflicting violence. it was Reggie’s inability to cut himself off from his twin brother that led to their inevitable downfall.

That murder took place on Evering Road in Stoke Newington. I used to live in house a few doors away from where it happened.
Previous to that I lived in a terraced house in Bethnal Green, a couple of streets along from Vallance Road, where their mum lived.
What was the general perception of them around that area?

Probably quite true. They made the mistake of doing their own dirty work, quite publicly.
Well, I lived there in the 90s, having left Sussex aged 19 to live in east London. This would be 30 years or so after their life sentences were handed down and I never heard any talk or mention of them.
I think the East End had changed a lot by then, and a lot of their contemporaries were either dead or probably moved out to Basildon or Harlow.
What did still exist, in small pockets, was a (non-violent, so far as I could tell) flourishing and vibrant market in the buying and selling all manner of bent gear -usually fags, booze and portable electronics and dodgy designer gear in pubs and drinking clubs. It was all done quite openly and seen as almost a more honourable way of making money that having a legitimate job. It’s easy to see how two charismatic brothers with a fearsome reputation for violence flourished in that environment.
