If we can't afford his wages then there is no way a smaller Spanish team would be able to.

I think it all depends on Barcelona and their finances. Can they afford to keep Ansu as part of their wage structure? Not really. Can they sell him for the type of money they expected when he signed his contract? Very unlikely. A loan is probably a likely option again, to either us or a similar sized side that can afford to cover the majority of his wages.

Barca will be banking on him having a good, injury free, season and either a) reintegrating him as an important first team player, or b) selling him for enough money that they are able to improve their financial status. I think that was the plan for this season but unless he has a world-beating end to the season, the injury may have put those plans back a year.

His priority is going to remain getting his fitness up and getting the minutes needed to hit the ground running for a tilt at the euros squad and his return to Barca, or more likely his sale to someone richer than us

That's the thing about getting loanees in, they may have different priorities

Interesting you mention this. I was sat behind the subs warming-up on Saturday and was surprised how uninterested he was on what was happening on the pitch. He was far too busy talking to Onana via his gloved hand to care about the game. I was generally unimpressed how much love there was amongst the opposing subs and man hugs going on!

Probably worth offering to take him for another season on loan, but on financial terms less favourable to Barca - after all, they'll be wanting him in the shop window, and the Albion is a good place for that.

I do wonder whether he would be willing to accept a pay cut to help out Barca. They reportedly need to reduce their wage bill by £200mil in the summer, so offloading his £200k per week would be a fair chunk of that. I think he's unlikely to regain a first team place in the Barca team or any other major European club to be honest.

I still think it's unlikely we sign him, but if we can afford to pay 80% of his wages now, we may be able to afford his wages for longer than 1 season. Not sure what Barca would want in terms of a fee though.

Can you think of any examples of other footballers taking a pay cut with the intention of helping out the club that gave them the contract?

I think there are many examples of players accepting transfers for less wages because their club has an accepted an offer and they no longer feel wanted. I think when it's the club where they came through the academy who are in financial trouble the chances may be higher.

Obviously helping out Barca wouldn't be the only reason he might accept a pay cut, but it may come into his thinking if considering an offer.

Coutihno at Villa. Barca weren’t paying him and Villa paid him a lower wage

Lots of aging players have taken a pay cut, because they are on the way down. None have done so to help out the club who gave them the contract

Agree with @SIMMO SAYS to a degree - we need a much more from him. He was just starting to get there before the injury I felt…
