Stress fractures seem quite common among young fast bowlers in cricket so I assume it’s par for the course for younger stars and he’ll grow out of it, a real shame though as he’s been excellent IMHO

Oof. Surgery isn't normally the treatment for a stress fracture. Usually you just rest it until it heals. Must be a pretty bad one.
We don't know his injury history before he joined the first team squad. If he's had a stress fracture of the same bone before they may have elected for surgery to strengthen the bone.
