My Sunday team played a league game once with 7 players.

It had been a freezing cold week, and the game was in doubt. You were supposed to call a central number at Winchester Council on the morning to get confirmation of any closed facilities. This is in the days before Whatsapp groups, etc, so it was down to the three designated drivers to each call the Council number, and let the people they were collecting know, if the game was off.

I called, and couldn't get through, so I picked up my three passengers and headed off for the ground. Another lad did the same. The final driver, DID get through and was told by the woman fielding the calls, that ALL games were off. So he texted his three passengers and went back to bed.

We got to the ground to find the ref and the opposition all ready to go - the ref's passed it playable. The game was a distance away and its too late to try to round up the others, so we played with 7.

The other (full) team were really not great, and remarkably we were 2-1 up at half-time, but ended up losing 3-2 with a really late winner.

My one and only season playing 11-a-side football as a kid was for Bishop's Hull U11s. We lost both our first two matches 15-0 and went on to lose every single match over the whole season. We did get better and there was even a match we were winning at half time. I think we lost that one 3-2.

I did at least score one goal though. The result was irrelevant that day (I think it was 9-1).

No, indeed.

Probably more annoying at the time, then getting spanked by a good team though - to lose narrowly just reinforced that we'd dropped three points in a game we would certainly have won in normal circumstances.

I'm not 100% certain of this, as it was more than 20 years ago, but I'm FAIRLY sure, that after 90 minutes of running my nuts off, effectively playing all positions down the left by myself, that I was somehow responsible for the late winner - a terrible back pass or some such disaster.
