The Gallows Pole by Benjamin Myers. His ‘wordsmithery’ is off the charts. Possibly the finest writing I’ve read, and I’ve read a few. Fantastic historical fiction superbly executed.

He's hilarious, I love most of his books! 'Made In America' is great too.

Theres definitely a theme developing in my reading lately, but I love picking up old baseball books cheap on eBay.
This is a fascinating look into all the subtle (and not so subtle) marginal gain methods...OK, cheating...that baseball players have used since the late 1800's to get an advantage over their opponents - with most of the practices now being banned outright.
For the cricket fans on here, its interesting to read that Willow was outlawed as a bat material because it was deemed too pliable, and gave the batter too much of an advantage when hitting the ball further. I often wondered why you only ever saw Ash & Maple etc being used for baseball, and not Willow, but now I know.
To reverse the theory...I wonder what a cricket bat made of Ash or Maple would perform like?

Just finished Red Card Roy, a footy autobiography by former Colchester United and Southend United striker / player-manger Roy McDonough. I remember see him playing against up a few times.
Anyway, it's a great read about the kind of dirty (in more ways than one
) player now mostly long gone from even the lower echelons of the game.
Not too many mentions of Brighton but John Keeley features a little bit for his brief stint at Colchester and his liking for a beverage or two.

I've just finished The Don, the definitive biography of Don Bradman. 699 pages plus 30 odd pages of stats.
Absolutely brilliant.
It describes his career from playing as a child in Bowral NSW, to club cricket, then Sheffield Shield before his international career in great detail.
But the insight into what it was like in the 1920s and 1930s is fascinating. That he had to have a job because cricket didn't pay enough to live on. And the 6-8 weeks it took to get to England for a tour. On tour here they would play 10 county matches (no one-dayers obviously) and often started these games the day after a Test match ended.
I can't recommend this book enough. Indeed if you want my copy (I won't read it again) PM me and you can have it for free (Ex P&P)
