how on earth does a Manchester referee get to officiate a game in Manchester involving a team from Manchester .........is the F.A having a laugh...??

because Fulham certainly aren't this morning.

You are aware there are more clubs in the Manchester metropolitan area than just Manchester United? How do you know he doesn't support City, or Oldham, or Rochdale, Stockport, Wigan, Hyde United, FCUM, Salford, Bolton, Curzon Ashton, Stalybridge Celtic etc?

Happens every week in England that refs are in charge of games from their own city. I think this is very strictly outlawed in basically every other European league and find it really odd its not the case in England. But I saw some graphic the other day showing where the PL refs were born and it looked like 30% or so were from Manchester.

This is a year old and quite a bit has happened since but think it is similar now:

That said... I think he made the right decisions

Of course, Fulham lost so they'll think the ref is shite as is always the case among supporters of the losing team, but that has no real connection with reality.

Thanks for posting. Very interesting graphic.

Watched the U21s Saturday, and the ref in that game was one of the best I’ve seen for some time.

Obviously different pressures, but still have to get decisions correct and manage players disappointment.

No time wasting either, though the Brighton player did very well to roll 5 yards after being fouled at one point - just managing to stay in the boundaries of the pitch. Amazingly, got up and took the free-kick without treatment.

As much as I do not like Man U the only contentious decision was sending off the manager. For a while now I’ve wanted a ref to grow some bollox with these players that swear and rant at them, my only question is would he have taken the same action if it had been the other way around? We’ll never know.
Well that's obviously not true. The big contentious decision the ref had to make was if the Fulham player moved his arm to an unnatural position to prevent a goal and initially Kavenagh decided no problem and gave a corner. William actually brings his arm down to a natural position before the ball strikes it. VAR then got involved, Kavanagh changed his on pitch decision, Willian got sent off, along with the manager and a incensed Mitrovic. That first decision with two outcomes played out on pitch, was clearly contentious and swung the match.

It's not contentious at all.

He deliberately stopped the ball going in with his hand. With VAR he'd have been better served by doing a Dunkish body dive in front of the ball.

The in a natural position is for when it's an accident.

I don't agree with referees overseeing teams from their own area as, regardless of who they support, they still have to go out in public and may feel the consequences of big decisions. That's got to bring a danger of unconscious bias.

No blame attached to Kavanagh on this one though. Both players had to go. Harder to know with Silva but we've no idea what he said - and they're supposed to leave the ref alone when he goes to the monitor.

I'm not convinced he did do it deliberately, when it's slowed down yes it does look like that, but at full speed I'm not sure he knew too much about where it was going to hit him. I felt the decision to send off and give a penalty was harsh, and that lead to the reaction from Mitrovic, changing the outcome of the game completely.

I hate Manure and thought Fulham were the better team but you can't argue against either of the players' reds. Willian was unlucky but it was his hand that stopped a goal and Mitrovic was a clown for pushing the ref. Even down to 10 and at 1-1 Fulham were still in it, the only person to blame here was Mitrovic he effectively ended the contest.

Dreadful. Just shouldn’t happen
The PGMOL and the FA are pathetic.

Should not happen. Should not be allowed to officiate. When did this start because officials from an area never used to be allowed to officiate at games with clubs local to them.
Or has my memory gone completely. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m convinced that in the past, officials from an area couldn’t officiate at “local” clubs. No idea when this changed

Saying that, Danny Makkelie refereed Ajax v Feyenoord yesterday in Amsterdam. He's a police officer in Rotterdam.

Looks like nearly all the refs are northern too...... :D

I think there is a point that even though they may not support the teams, as they are from the area they could open them up for local abuse as most fans are from that area.
Which would prevent any London referees reffing Man Utd games ;)

Really?? Wild stuff considering the rivalry.

If a referee from Stockholm would be in charge (not happening, but theoretically) of game between AIK, Hammarby or Djurgården and Malmö FF/IFK Göteborg, it would be a very dangerous situation for him.
