Gary Lineker is to step back from presenting Match of the Day until an agreement is reached on his social media use - BBC statement.
It follows an impartiality row over comments he made criticising the government's new asylum policy.
In a tweet, the presenter had compared the language used by the government to set out its plan to "that used by Germany in the 30s".

No winners at all. They all looked silly, the BBC, Lineker,Wright and all connected. I actually thought, that I watched it more closely than usual on Saturdays as you do when listening to radio commentary. If the BBC choose to bin him off and save a few pounds, not sure anyone would worry. Get Murray and Virgo in.

I'm amazed that so much credence is given to Lineker's comments. If I were on the level of payment which he pockets I think I'd be keeping a lower profile. Nevertheless, if he wants to make his name in politics (which seems to be the objective) then let him stand in an election somewhere and see if he can convince the voters.

"Wants to make his name in politics"?! The media picked up on a single Tweet, which might have been forgotten by now.

But the BBC made it lead story on the evening news, Radio 4 etc. The Mail splashed on it all week.

All the amplification came from the right-wing press in an attempt to paint him as a bad guy. It did not go well for them.

Let’s try and concentrate on what is being said rather than who is saying it.

We have a government willing to risk the safety of children to hang on to a few angry voters.

I fort I lived in a democracy the last time I looked. It’s just my opinion. Fed up with this cancel culture trying to cancel everything, first of all they cancel asylum seakers, then Lineker then they cancel the Match of a Day. They are all the same, BBC, Lineker, Politicians, bin the lot!

I mean, it's not on Match of the Day, is it? He seems very focussed on sport when on TV.
