Nothing can be done on recycling rates unfortunately. A terrible long term contract was signed.

Whoever gets in, has to make crap choices about cuts. The central government grant has been hugely reduced over the years. It's they who are to blame, if your local library, public toilet, playground is closed

2 of the 4 year term though is highly likely to be in power with a Labour Government, I appreciate once in it will take 500years to reverse mess

Mrs Barnett will get one of my votes, and I’ll choose two of the 3 Labour, I should add Labour have called by my house twice now, obviously no sign of the Greens and I assume the Cons might feel this is a safe ward and haven’t done much canvassing!

@Brovion Hollingdean and Stanmer doesn't exist anymore. Parts of Fiveways has merged with parts of Hollingdean , which will make it interesting as there'll be more traditional Labour territory in there.

Regarding the Veolia contract (signed by Labout, for the record), the Greens have taken legal advice on changing it but it looks very unlikely to be successful. Veolia is a multinational operator and probably outgunned the Council and East Sussex. Interestingly, Veolia is now importing waste from outside the County to keep the incinerator burning. There's an inherent barrier to more recycling as it needs fossil fuel based err fuel (eg plastic) to keep going. Because it makes electricity, it is counted in some official figures as recycling.

Apologies - that and what the Green party say about the Veolia contract is utter nonsense.

There's nothing to stop BHCC from collecting food waste - the contract provides for it and the facility to recycle it is ready and waiting and Lewes already use it for their food waste. BHCC just have chosen not to go down that route albeit - for the last few years - they have been waiting on confirmation of central government funding for rolling out new food waste services.

BHCC could boost the City's recycling rate by collecting residual black bag waste fortnightly but the Greens choose to continue to collect it weekly. Hastings, Wealden, Rother and Eastbourne all collect fortnightly...

The Newhaven Energy Recovery facility is in no way a barrier to greater recycling and what it burns doesn't get counted as 'recycling' - its 'energy recovery'.

The Greens love to blame Veolia but they - as normal - offer nothing much by way of an alternative.

What would they do with the waste instead of incinerating to generate electricity? Stick it in the ground? That contract has been very successful in reducing the City's waste to landfill down to about 2%.

What is the Green Party's solution for black bag waste?

What’s wrong with collections? Been fine here for ages now since the last strike. Still poor elsewhere in the city?

I’ll deal in the facts, last year my recycling collection was missed 7 times, at one point we hadn’t had a collection for over 6 weeks, refuse was 6 occasions last year!

Already this year 2 recycling collections missed, there’s only been a potential of 5

Last week the grass area in Montpelier Crescent was still part covered by Christmas trees ffs.

We had all that. It was ‘Covid’ absences, they must’ve been the mostly unlucky pandemic victims on the planet :lolol:

. Classic public sector. So they shifted staff around to make refuse collection the priority.
