The thing that sinks them is the court case that city tried to hide vs the PL

Why would any innocent party:

1. try to fight handing over docs
2. install a gagging order to the media to stop them reporting.

This isn’t the FA though, it’s the EPL which has charged them.

How much input/influence/support do the other Prem clubs have over this charge?

Reason I ask is there seems to have been a shift in attitude between the big clubs and the others since the super league fiasco. Barber said there was a vote to remove them from various EPL boards and I remember they registered their concern regarding the Newcastle takeover. Sadly this latter point was not for the owners but their finances distorting the competition. Just curious if the guy who runs the EPL is being driven, in part, by other members.

It will be interesting to hear Barbers thoughts.

None, I would have thought. Thats why its an independent commission that will recommend the punishment. EPL clubs all have vested interests - the top clubs want City out of the top 4 / title equation, the bottom clubs want them relegated so one of their arses is saved.

They've got to throw the book at them to send a message to other (Chelsea) teams that FFP isn't a suggestion.

Whilst an independent commission will review the case, as per EPL rules, the charges were brought by the Premier League. I’m just curious if there‘s any known input/influence/support/endorsement/lobbying etc from member clubs. Barber seems a very active participant in the EPL, and has been reasonably open about the role of clubs in things like the super league and covid. I hope, and expect, Richard Masters has our CEO permanently in his ear over this. Hopefully he’ll be on @The Albion Roar soon to tell us.

Clearly they should be relegated if all the allegations are proven. Just can't see the Premier League doing it and losing one of their 'big' clubs in the process. I hope I'm wrong. Most laughable suggestion I've seen was one of The Athletic's Chelsea hacks advocating that the only fair action is retrospective (i.e. stripped of titles etc) as it's not fair to punish the current team. The blindingly obvious flaw in that argument being that everything a football club spends/wins feeds into its future success in helping to attract more lucrative (sometimes even real) sponsorship, better players, better managers and more.

I assume he fears Chelsea will be next, a few years down the line.

It took years to get this far and to discover this much. What the hell have they been doing since then? I'd imagine that there is more to discover if anyone had the energy to do so.

And as for starting to root out all the other FFP cheats - will that now happen?

Also need to be minded this only accounts for the period up to 2018 and not since. There could be more to come.

At around 7am this morning, Martin Samuel (now chief football writer for The Times / Sunday Times) was on TalkSPORT discussing all this on the show with Laura Woods and Alli McCoist. He has always been a huge critic of FFP and how it "stifles" new monied competition, crystalising the top clubs and stopping any others with rich owners investing and breaking through to join the cartel, and I can partially agree with some of what he says when he clambers back on that hobbyhorse. To that end, in his columns, he's often defended Man City to the hilt, and very much sounded like he was going down that route again this morning. That was until a few minutes in they suddenly "lost the line" (and this never seems to happen mid-stream, but when there is a pause after the question).

Oddly, they never managed to get him back. Oh, and another trinket - one of Samuel's sons works for Man City, in some capacity or other.

Funny that.

I’ve established the timeline.

- Sept 08 ManC were taken over. No one was aware of the corruption in the ensuing years, that is had any factual evidence.
- 2016 The hacker Rui Pinto gave his files of evidence to DerSpiegel, which they spent sometime corroborating.
- Nov 18 Der Spiegel published the evidence.
- Mar 19 The EPL open their investigation.
- Mar 19 UEFA open their investigation.
- July 20 ManC ultimately win their appeal to CAS of a CL ban, partly because of UEFA’s time limitation rule. ManC were still proven guilty on several charges.
- July 21 The Court Of Appeal overturned a gagging order, revealing that the EPL had spent over two years trying to obtain documents, through the courts, from ManC. ManC had resisted every step of the way.

To me its seems the EPL have been efficient on a complex case. Football writers explain that Abu Dhabi deliberately use attrition to wear the football authorities down.

Another funny issue is he has kept very quiet about whose luxury yacht he spent some time on when watching an F1 race in...can't quite remember the venue
