Please report back, aside from the Arctic and Japan the West Coast of the USA is the last on my Bucket List before I become too decrepit to travel!

Good food choices across especially Italian, Mexican (well californian version of it) and seafood, if you are into war stuff the aircraft carrier is worth a visit. Be prepared to be shocked at the amount of homeless on the streets.

More votes for Inn n Out burgers and the Zoo. Some fantastic whale and dolphin watching trips available if you like that kind of thing too.

Brighton factually.....
Be prepared to be shocked at the amount of homeless on the streets.
That is not just a San Diego thing though to be fair, San Fran is bad, even Detroit has a fair amount of homeless folks wondering the streets and it is freezing in winter.

I would add, take time out to see the bad areas, even if it is whistle stop.
It will make you appreciate what safety nets we have, even though they have faults, America can seem like a third world country in parts.

Whereabouts are you staying? We were in Little Italy and the whole of Downtown is really easy to walk to / around if you are up to it. We saw so much more by walking everywhere. If not, you can hire & hop on e-scooters everywhere, or get the trams.

- Seaport Village is nice to wander round for a couple of hours with all the small shops & cafes etc (think Bicester Village).
- Richard Walkers Pancake House for breakfast. (Be warned though, eating out can be expensive now over there! Cost us $90 for 4 breakfasts & drinks)
- Cheesecake Factory does some great food.
- USS Midway is great if you like military history & aviation.
- The Gaslamp Quarter has loads of bars and restaurants.
- As mentioned above, the Zoo is fantastic.
- Balboa Park - amazing architecture and museums.
- Boat trip across to Coronado. Catch a bus to the main part of town from the landing port and mooch along the strip up to the Coronado Hotel....or do any harbor trip.
- Petco Park Tour & Team Store if you like baseball.
- Kansas City BBQ "Top Gun" bar. Yes, the piano, jukebox, & loads of Top Gun memorabilia etc are still there! Does get busy though, so prepare to wait - or book it early.
- Tram ride down to San Ysidro on the border with Tijuana for the Outlet Mall.
- Old Town (take a city bus tour which you can then hop on and off) Amazing Mexican food, and some great little stores.
- Little Italy has some good places to eat....Mr Moto Pizza is perfect if you're after a quick bite on the go.
- The Star of India ship down on the waterfront (bit like HMS Warrior in Pompey)
- Surfliner train ride up to Oceanside.
- Mission Beach / La Jolla / Sunset Cliffs...if its warm enough!

There is a ticket you can buy before you go as well, which will allow you entry to the Midway / Old Town Tour / Petco Park Tour etc. I think you can choose 5 or 6 attractions to use it on, and it was well worth the money. Will ask the missus where she found it / how much it was, and get back to you.

Have a great time - my absolute favourite US city. Its fantastic 😎

** - yes there are a lot of homeless people around, but we were never once harrassed or felt uneasy walking around, even at night. As @Psychobilly freakout says above - just take it all in.

Many many thanks for replying and giving such a good run down, we are staying in the Sheraton Hotel & Marina. We are going for 4 days for my 50th, so defo won't be able to cover everything but will be visiting USS Medway for sure as we are both aviation freaks

Was it something like this?

Used similar in San Francisco and it was well worth the money.

You'll certainly be able to cover Downtown / Seaport / Coronado / Midway in 4 days. Its a lot smaller than you realise, and so easy & quick to get around.
If time is against you, its very easy to get an Uber everywhere - just download the app.

Have a brilliant time, & happy birthday!

We are heading back there next year for my 50th, my sons 18th & 21st, my dads 80th, and our 25th Anniversary!
