As I was growing up he seemed to be the only class England player, played in the famous Barbarians vs. All Blacks game.
Totally agree. In my naive way I used to ask ‘Why don’t they give Duckham the ball more often? Every time they do he scores a try!”

An absolute gem in a mainly dross England team throughout the 1970s. So good was he that the Welsh fans and players (who were the absolute best in that era) nicknamed him ‘Dai’ because he played like a Welshman.

If you get a chance watch some of David Duckham’s ‘after dinner’ stories on YouTube - hilarious.

R.I.P. Dai.

Never really liked Rugby that much, but I did go to watch him at Coventry. RIP.

I can hear Cliff Morgan commentating... "Duckham throws, Ripley palms"

Happy days.
I worked with Andy Ripley in the early 1970's, a giant of a bloke. He had a distinctive way of running which made it difficult to tackle (then) as he brought his knees up, so a tackler risked getting a knee in the face. After retirement he became a BBC TV pundit, then tragically got cancer in his early 50's and died. I couldn't help thinking how such a fit bloke could keel over like that.
I had missed David Duckham's death, there have been so many recently. He played alongside someone called Spencer for England, was he inside half?
