[Albion] Remember when Tariq Lamptey was our next £50 million player?

Post-injury, Lamptey seems to have lost a lot of what made him such an exciting young talent. I'm sure lack of game time doesn't help but watching him being skinned by Martinelli yesterday - something I thought I'd never see - as well as his overall performance makes me think that maybe Potter had his reasons for benching him so often.

He’s more of a RWB than a conventional RB in my opinion, he lacks the defensive nous. Usually someone like Caicedo is on hand to slot back and cover (that stops the first goal yesterday IMHO) but with him out that nous disappears.

He was the best player on the pitch in nearly every game before his injury, he was probably the most exciting right back I have ever seen.

The injury did a job on him. While still a reasonably pacy player he is nowhere near as fast as before the injury. Unfortunately this is unlikely to change - you can improve most parts of a player but making them quicker is very difficult.

Without the pace, he is still a decent player, just miles off any £50m valuation, and also pretty far from a starting position in a good PL team. Still young and will improve but he's going to have to work hard if he wants to remain a Brighton player... and that's not something I say lightly - I love the bloke - but the unfortunate reality of it. Its a bit heartbreaking what the injury did to him.

Gilmour was all over the place early on before he settled too - we massively missed Moises/Ali covering and tackling. That first goal doesn’t happen if one of them is playing

Agreed. Watching Gilmour made me appreciate how effortless Caicedo and AMac make that pivot position look.

Think Lamptey got way too much blame for the first goal. He needed to get past one more player to be one on one against Ramsdale but unfortunately the Arsenal defender took the ball from him. It happens. Mitoma failed a dribble or two, Trossard as well, even Solly did.

If he had been in a defensive position trying to dribble his opponent and they took it and scored... fine, bit of blame would be reasonable. But when hefailed his dribble he had 10 Brighton players behind him. You could argue that one or two those could have done something to prevent he goal from happening.

Agree with all of that ….including the positive that Gilmour settled….when was the last time he played a full PL game i wonder (and against the league leaders)

Yet still pretty much matched the second fastest player in the division over half the length of the pitch ?

Not sure who or when you are referring to, but yeah like I said - he is still quick. Just not twice as fast as everyone else like he was before.
Being (allegedly) ‘skinned‘ by Martinelli yesterday - he’s the second fastest in the division this season after Nuñez at 35.9 kph. Tariq was clocked at 36.6kph in 2020. Suggesting he’s ‘nowhere near as fast as he was’ is wide of the mark imo.

Presumably none of those runs were made with the ball and just because Martinelli at some point made a 35.9 kph run doesn't mean that all of his runs are that fast.

I think it is quite visible that Lamptey does not have the same pace as he did before the injury, despite not really having any data to back it up.

It's not just the speed it's the distance. Before injury we would regularly see him sprint from our 10 yard box, dribble with the ball, skip past oppo midfield like they weren't there and reach oppo corner flag trying to keep the ball while he waited for one of our to catch him up .lol. now he's slightly slower but also his runs are shorter. Maybe that's tactical? What we need is a combination of Webster and Lamptey in one body lol . Webster for upper body strength to barge past players and Lamptey for the pace and skills.
Having written that down I'm now thinking we had that player, his name was Cucarella, DOH, oh well

Yesterday he looked to my eyes faster than he has been for some while …played well overall and saw out the whole game ..longtime since the latter has happened in a PL game (if memory serves me correct)

He can get the pace back, age is on his side. It’s both a physiological and psychological journey, he’s in good hands.

I recall young EPL starlets who were beset with similar injuries, doom-mongers wrote them off, yet they got past that to have brilliant playing careers.

RB …. I prefer Veltman every day of the week.
