Thanks. That's very clear.
sorry, the whole post wasn’t directed at you - I just wanted to clarify why we are beyond ‘there being some hope Qatar want to be part of the wider world’ - she already is in terms of international human rights treaties - she’s just not abiding by them!

I thought my lack of interest in the England games would lessen as the tournament went on, but it’s got worse. Have no interest if England win, lose or draw but enjoyed watching France and the Argies amongst others. Not watched anywhere near as much as in previous tournaments though.

Bit of a dangerous road to travel. It is not inconceivable that one day the Chinese/Russian worldview takes route in the UN and around the developing world. I have no intention of ever giving up my values regardless of what happens elsewhere. Persuasion and modelling of our principles is still the best way forward.
Did you miss the point of my post - we haven’t imposed anything on Qatar - she is signatory to the UN Declaration on human rights by her own volition -

By ‘our principles’ you mean the UK? We are also signatories of the UDHR.

We get our understanding and laws on Human Rights from the European Convention of Human Rights 1950. The ECHR 1950 is based on the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948.
I don’t understand your comments at all. I’m not sure what the Chinese/Russian worldview have to do with Qatar anyway.

In fact, your isolationist view is the one most likely to lead you down a dangerous path IMO rather than a concept of human rights almost universally agreed by all the largest nations on earth.

No, I understand your point and was pleased to be enlightened. I had no idea they have been pretending to be on board with the 21st century, while 'the west' pats them kindly on the head.

If only we had leaders who were willing to identify the tomfoolery and demand a stop to it..... like, er, Trump and Johnson (and 'call me' Dave, and little Dubya).

Still haven't watched any of it. Haven't opened a match/day thread either.
Yes, entirely this.
One of the reasons i have not opened any is because i do not want to be tempted to in any way to pass judgement on anyone who has adopted the opposite view to me or to upset them or spoil their day. I do find it a little odd, in my view, that some of those who are watching cannot just be happy in the decision they have made.
Of course, another reason is not to upset myself. Do i regret the result of my decision being that i am missing something that i normally enjoy so much? Yes certainly, without a shadow of doubt. However, and this is the crucial point, do i regret the actual decision and the reasons why i made it? No not at all.
Whatever happens i will stick by the decision i made and bear no ill will to either those who watched from the start or those who changed their mind part way through as i am fully aware of the attraction.

Pretty much where I am at. I would like to be watching the England game now but know that if I do it won't feel right.

Some of us still believed in Gareth Southgate when we'd been relegated from the Nations League and were 2-0 down to Germany back in September. My faith in him is being rewarded. Around 80% on here wanted him out. The irony now is I can't get to see how well we're doing and the fickle fan base have seen 12 goals in four matches.

I wonder how the bedwetters are reacting on World Champions-elect England on the main thread? They'll revert to type when France win 3-1 next week. This is all feels very 2002ish. A 3-0 win over an unfancied side in the last 16 then running into a GIANT thousands of miles from home. Whoever's playing in central defence (Maguire or Stones) will be the scapegoat as usual.

The Hungary slaughter at Molyneux was the nadir.

I don't think it's right that this thread is now being stamped on by smug, irritating comments by posters that seem to have all the time in the world on their hands. The run-up to Christmas is absolutely manic in my job. I barely get twenty minutes a day to look at NSC in the week at the moment. The block function has its use I suppose.

Enjoy Morocco v Croatia tomorrow or Tuesday.

Fair play to you. You and the rest taking a stand have my respect

I find principals only tend to really count when they are tested and come at some personal cost.

Brighton factually.....
My intentions and moral compass told me to not watch this World Cup.
but ultimately I love football.
my belief that we destined to disappoint has not wavered.

As someone earlier in this thread said. ”itwould be very English to win the most tainted World Cup”

footballs, football, @ every level, that’s why we love it, despite those that seek to use for other purposes.

Blimey, chap. It’s not a post count competition where you constantly have to reinforce your position. The fact you’re missing decent football makes your position stronger, not weaker.

On the other hand, someone who has made an NSC career of reposting nationalistic right wing bollocks, albeit in an almost illegible syntax, posting “come on Senegal” minutes before they were dry humped 3-0 is f***ing funny. Either you’re a patriot or you’re not,

Don't you think that the World Cup belongs to the people of the World? It doesn't belong to FIFA, or to to the Qatar government, or to any of the uber-rich multi-national sponsors. f*** FIFA, f*** the rulers of Qatar, I'm not going to let them take away my enjoyment of the people's game. If Qatar want to spend 200 billion on hosting the games whilst exposing their human rights abuses to the world, then let the twats do that. This is our World Cup, not theirs, I'm going to support our team and enjoy the rest of the matches (whilst also going to watch my daughter play in the 5th tier of the English league on Sundays).
This is very thought provoking.

I've been doing a "soft boycott" - not really a boycott, just not going out of my way to watch it, or to specifically make arrangements to watch the games in pubs etc. If it's on when I'm channel flicking it's on. I don't dive for the off button if they talk about a result on the radio.

So I guess my approach is "not much enthusiasm", and "glad when it's behind us".

But you've made me think with your post.

I get it, I do, but I think its just letting them win. We didn't choose this country to host the world cup, but thats not out fault, the fans nor the players, its still the world cup, the peoples game, not the suits' game, and that's how I'm treating it.
I totally get that - but there's an equally valid argument that they "win" if we watch it. And I say that as someone who has watched most of it.
