Sitting here at home watching the game with friends, we’ve ended up speculating the following?

Is Ronaldo the first player to play at a World Cup finals without a domestic club?

As most contracts globally finish on 30th June, no one would have gone to a tournament before without a club?

Unless NSC knows different😂

( This game really needs a goal 😂)

I remember Angolan striker Akwa had left his club six months before the 2006 World Cup. There's probably more among the smaller nations.

Wasn’t Roger Milla officially retired when he played for Cameroon?
No, he’d previously retired from international football but came out of retirement for Italia 90. He was still playing club football in France at the time.

Maradonna was probably on Crack leave from one club or other at one of his toot fuelled WC outings.

In the 1974 world cup Johan Cruyff wore a different shirt to his team mates. Hollands kit manufacturer was Adidas, Cruyff had a sponsirship deal with Puma, thats why Cruyff shirt had only 2 stripes on the sleeve instead of 3.

Wasn’t that the same story with the boots as well?

Although being included in the squad for 78 world cup he refused to take his place, the story from the rest of the players was that his wife made all the decisions for him and she stopped him going. He was blamed by the Dutch fans for Holland not winning in 78.

Truth is, a few months before, he was held a gunpoint anlong with his wife and children in his house by burglars. After this him and his family had to had 24hr protection. Who knows what might have happened in 78 if he did go.

It was at the Euro’s rather than the World Cup but funnily enough it happened to another top Portugese player in 2000. Joao Pinto was between clubs (Benfica and Sporting in the end) and played in the tournament as a free agent.
