You know the word virtue is a positive thing don't you? It is a strange post that criticises virtuousness being stirred up.
I suppose it is from the moribund phrase 'virtue signalling', a phrase that allows the hard of thinking to dismiss someone being virtuous (remember a positive) without considering or acknowledging what they are saying.
The funniest thing about the phrase 'virtue signalling' is that it is exactly that. Use it and we all know that you are not one of these 'woke' 'snowflakes'.
Trouble is that it is another social media construct that stifles debate and keeps everyone divided because they refuse to try and understand what each other think. Show some respect to your fellow posters (you are here for a reasons right?) And engage in discussion if you disagree.
Not really aimed at you Sydney, I am just sick of this social media name calling bullshit stopping us talking. See also gammon etc etc. We are better than that.

I'm not sure that's fair. He's done loads of these stunts to raise awareness of inequality and global issues before and in sure he'll continue to, but they aren't done purely for his own personal benefit.
For example, when he 'stormed out' of a TV show as part of a protest against the use of white plastic bottles for Yop that couldn't be recycled. (The company subsequently changed its policy).
Or when he changed his name to Hugo Boss to highlight the brand threatening a smaller company, Boss Brewing, for daring to use the word 'Boss'.
He even had his own show dedicated to helping consumers take on corporations when they feel they've been unfairly treated!
But sure, think of his as 'just' another chancer self-publicist if you like...

I think if he'd taken this identical battle but with someone who has actual power and influence (say, the English FA or English govt. that deals a great lot with Qatar) rather than some clueless object of a man (former celeb David Beckham), I'd certainly feel it was more valuable battle.

I've never known an awareness campaign that "didn't work" or "could have been better" continue to be talked about several days after.

Well, that's kind exactly the point about why Beckham is the problem.
Beckham took a shed load of money, specifically to deflect from all of the points you mention, plus immigrant deaths, LGBTQ+ persecution etc. He's a Qatari shill, a fluffer, there specifically to do the role of saying "Don't look at all of this awful, awful stuff happening over there, look how nice the view is from this Qatari landmark?"
Calling out Beckham is calling out all of the rest of it by association

I don't think anyone has said that.
Some people, such as Lycett, have drawn attention to the bad aspects of Qatar and its world cup hosting. Others have taken the Qatari shilling to shill for them. People have commented on this.
There is no need to demand a discussion about who is completely and most fabulously correct and who is the chief architect of every evil.
(And also, the fact this thread keeps being bounced justifies Lycett's 'stunt').
